Ten C.H.U.G. Figures That Need Updates (Page 2)

Pipes
Released: 2015
Segment: Generations

Pipes

As I'm writing this article I literally just received "Generations" Pipes in the mail. This figure is a straight up redeco of Huffer who himself was a retool/redeco of Optimus Prime. At this point, I wish Pipes would get his own brand new sculpt. I liked the character a lot in his all to brief appearances in the G1 cartoon. I think a Legends Class figure with complexity on par with Huffer and Optimus Prime is fine, but since we just got a new Pipes figure, I doubt we'll see this guy updated with a new sculpt any time soon.

Prowl
Released: 2008
Segment: Universe 2.0

Prowl

You may be thinking "Now hold on Ben, they just put out a new Prowl!" and you'd be correct, except this list is focused on characters who I think deserve a whole new sculpt, and Prowl is one of them. I liked the Deluxe Class figure from 2008, but it had issues including the side panels popping off if you looked at them funny. With a new Transformers team in place since that era I think there are definite possibilities in creating a new Prowl that is G1 accurate on the Deluxe Scale. Since he just appeared in "Combiner Wars" it is unlikely we'll see a G1-esque upgrade any time soon, but if they did do it, that opens up the possibility of getting both a Bluestreak and Smokescreen update as well!

Ratchet
Released: 2009
Segment: Universe 2.0

Strafe

When I reviewed Ratchet back in 2009 it was the first time the character had been updated in a while, so it was great having a mass release Ratchet on shelves again. However over time dozens of new figures have been released, showing different engineering possibilities that made Ratchet's vehicle mode gaps and somewhat odd transformation seem less amazing than they did over five years ago. A "G1 style" Ratchet is definitely overdue. Yes, we are getting a Masterpiece Ratchet next year but in the context of the "Generations" toy line there is a gap that I think Ratchet would fill nicely.

Strafe
Released: 2009
Segment: Henkei! Henkei!

Strafe

I'm reaching a bit on this one since Henkei! Henkei! Strafe was technically an exclusive in Japan, but there's a larger point here. One of the last Voyager Class figures to be released as part of "Combiner Wars" is Scattershot, leader of the Technobots. However there have been no announcements about any of Scattershot's crew being redone (though it is highly probably the sculpt being used for Ramhorn at Botcon 2016 will double as a base sculpt for Nosecone). It would also be relatively easy to take any Stunticon and the Deluxe Groove from Japan to create the other Technobots, but Strafe deserves to be his own distinctive figure and not just an Aerialbot redeco. I always found his aerial form distinctive with its two blasters extending out in the front and angled wings. It would be a treat to get Strafe (and by extension, the other Technobots) to help finish out "Combiner Wars" in 2015.

Thunderwing
Released: 2010
Segment: Generations

Thunderwing

The 2010 version of Thunderwing was a Deluxe Class figure that used Thunderwing's "Pretender Shell" design without any inner robot(s). However, that sacrifice meant leaving out some of the coolest things about the G1 toy: namely the ability for his Pretender "shell" to reveal the "real" robot inside and combine with that robot in the shell's vehicle form. I think a Voyager Class figure is definitely in order here. I'd love to see a modern day take on a Pretender where the shell and the robot inside can combine into a larger vehicle. Also given the character's prominence in past stories, it would be very cool to see him get his due as a character.
