Beast Machines Transformers

Arcee is one of the toys that fans have long wanted. Although a prototype for an Arcee toy was made back in the 80's, and the Headmaster Chromedome was considered as a potential repaint to create an Arcee toy, ultimately she was never produced. With the mega sized Botcon 2001 exclusive, fans finally have the first Hasbro sanctioned toy of Arcee. This is not the G1 Arcee however, this one is a repaint of the mega Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia! This review will focus on the changes made to the toy for this release. For a more detailed review of the toy, please read the Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia toy review.

Arcee comes in a large sized box. The front artwork is a web (the same type that Tarantulas and Blackarachnia used during the Beast Wars) with Arcee in front. Flip open the panel on the packaging and you see the toy inside. On the inside of the flap are three images showing off Arcee's various abilities. All renderings were done by Mainframe Entertainment. The back shows Arcee in another pose. Again there is a web in the background, and astute viewers will note that the floor is actually the floor used for the underground caverns in Beast Machines. Arcee's tech specs are designed to look like the Generation One tech specs, down to the fonts and red grid for the Strength, Intelligence etc. In a fantastic touch, Arcee does include the red "decoder" to read her tech specs properly. A bang up job on the packaging.

Beast Mode:
Arcee is a mega sized spider in beast mode, but her colors make her instantly recognizable as the popular female Autobot. Most prominant is the combination of white and pink. Much of the pink on her body is vacuume metallized, creating a very nice looking effect. Blue is used on her claws and mandibles and a bit on her mid section.

Aside from her colors, another significant change is in the Spark Crystal. In the original Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia toy, you could flip the Spark Crystal around to reveal either a Maximal or a Predacon symbol. Here, Arcee has the symbols which embody her past and present identities. On one side is an Autobot symbol, and flip it over to reveal a Maximal symbol! This is a very cool touch that adds a bit of character to the toy.

Robot Mode:
In robot mode, Arcee's color scheme is striking as it leaves little doubt that this is the classic Autobot character reborn. She is mostly off white with some pearl white parts on her legs and face. Pink parts are found on her head, lower arms, lower legs and waist. She even has her lips painted pink! Her breastplate has been modified to not include the plastic "cover piece" and the holes that are there for Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia are absent, having been filled in. Overall, it looks much better without the extra plastic piece. Like Blackarachnia, Arcee has an hourglass painted on her, but this time it is gold.

For those who felt that Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia's spin kick action was not strong enough, it seems Hasbro and 3H made it a point to make this feature work in this toy better than the original. Also, her ankle joints are slightly tighter than those on Blackarachnia, giving more stability to the figure. For those curious, Blackarachnia does have her gun which still "fires" a line with the mandibles at the end.

In many ways, this Arcee toy allowed Hasbro to fix up the weaknesses they had made on the original
Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia toy. I'm sure some of this was due to 3H's input, so it's compliments all around for another cool exclusive toy! A+
