Mudflap is one of the new Autobots featured in "Revenge of the Fallen". He and Skids are featured as "twins" and there is no doubt the hope was for the two to become "break out" characters as Bumblebee had in the first Transformers film. Being a feature character, he was one of the ones chosen to get the Fast Action Battler treatment, allowing younger kids to be able to have a transformable version of the character without dealing with the complexity of the deluxe version.

Robot Mode:
The Fast Action Battlers are generally simplified designs based on those featured in the movie. However, many of the "Revenge of the Fallen" Fast
Action Battlers have managed to elevate the level of detail and accuracy to the CGI models. With Mudflap, I would almost argue that in many ways his Fast Action Battler design is almost the way you can imagine Mudflap would look if he was designed for a regular Transformers series such as G1 or Armada. Unlike the CGI model which features a ton of panels broken up and separated to reveal machinery underneath, Mudflap's design is much more solidified and self contained. For instance, the torso on the CGI model has four primary panels separated from each other, with gaps in the middle to reveal the machinery underneath. In this version, the front of the vehicle mode is completely intact, with no sections divided. However, he still has the headlights of the vehicle on his chest with the orange panels from the vehicle mode quite prominant. His legs are another example, where each section are designed to be cohesive sections with beveled surfaces representing details on the legs, but the armor panels aren't broken up in any way. However, the general design resembles the CGI model in that the ankles have wheels embedded in them and his feet have two large toes sculpted into the front section. His arms also feature details carried over from the CGI model including angled armor panels on the outside of the forearms. His arms are also asymmetrical in size with the left forearm being much larger than the left.

Sadly, one of the most CGI accurate detail on this figure is the robot head. Replicating the Gremlin like head design, all of Mudflap's CGI ugliness is here to see including his uneven googlie eyes, floppy ears and rounded jaw incluing his teeth. Seriously, this is one ugly head design that just makes me sad and repulsed all at the same time. It also bugs me because the other parts of the body are so nicely designed and sleek that having such an odd and ugly head design detracts from it when it really shouldn't.

Mudflap is cast in metallic orange, grey and black plastic. Metallic orange makes up most of his body including the torso, left forearm and most of the legs. Grey is used for other parts such as his right arm, thighs and waist. Black is used for the wheels. Paint applications are done up in metallic blue, silver, grey and red. Metallic blue is the most prominant, found on his headlights and the windows on the doors mounted on his back. The blue is also used for the robot eyes. Silver is used for smaller details such as the circle outlining the headlights and smaller details on his head, arms and torso. Grey paint is used on parts like his legs, breaking up the orange plastic and keeping it from looking monotonous. It should also be mentioned that there is a tiny bit of gold paint used to paint the Chevrolet logo on his chest. The color scheme is well done. I really like the metallic orange color since it is accurate to the real life vehicle

There are seven points of articulation on this figure. This includes three points of articulation between the two arms and four between the two legs. The head doesn't move, but that's hardly unusual for a Fast Action Battler figure. His action feature involves his middle finger on the left arm (seriously). Detach it and pull it and you'll see the string line built into the forearm come out. The finger can be hooked on surfaces to hang, similar to how the character used his claw and line to hook onto Devastator in "Revenge of the Fallen". At the end of the string is a small plug that attaches to his upper arm. It helps when you want to retract the finger on the line. I really dig this gimmick since it is right out of the movie and you don't just get a tiny bit of string but enough that it is about the height of the figure.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Swing the panel on the back of the figure forward, bringing the robot head into the chest piece.
  2. Swing each robot arm back.
  3. Swing the robot arms up against the top of the vehicle.
  4. Swing the robot legs up separately and then connect them together.

Vehicle Mode:
Mudflap's vehicle mode is based on the Chevrolet Trax concept car. The vehicle looks a bit like a compact SUV with some mini-van influences. It has a rather squat appearance with some of the characteristic Chevrolet design elements including the Chevrolet logo in the front and the cross hatch grille in the front. The wheel wells have high curves and mounted on the top of the vehicle is a rack. Among the more unique details are the headlights and the rear lights, all four of which are circular in shape. Each light is divided slightly, with about 1/3 of the light curved on top with a distinct dividing line separating it from the rest of the light. All these features are present on Mudflap including an additional feature at the back, a rear spoiler mounted on the top of the vehicle. The interesting part is that while Fast Action Battlers are generally meant to be squat, somewhat exaggerated versions of the vehicles they represent, Mudflap's vehicle mode looks almost just like the real life vehicle, only simplified slightly (and not quite as shiny).

Orange plastic is the primary color. The metallic orange does a good job of simulating the orange of the real life vehicle. The front grille and the sides are painted grey, and the equivalent sections on the back are also grey. The windows are painted metallic blue. The headlights are painted light blue and red while the rear lights are painted red. The Chevrolet symbol in the front is painted gold. Silver is used for the lower part of the front end and the tubes that wrap around the front and rear lights.

Mudflap rolls well on his four wheels and all the panels from the robot mode hold together well.

Final Thoughts:
Like Skids, I really had a tough time reviewing this figure at first because I admit I have a bias against the character. However, I do have to admit that overall, this is a very cool figure. It represents the character well and has a neat gimmick to boot. That said, I still absolutely hate the head design. If this had a different head, I'd be much more fond of the figure. To be fair however, I'm going to rate it as recommended overall since it is a good figure that is CGI accurate (or as accurate as Fast Action Battlers get) and has fun play value.
