Background
In 1986, Transformers fans were introduced to a large group of new characters including Scourge, the Tracker! Formed from the parts of dead Decepticons, Scourge was created by Unicron to serve Galvatron and he went on to become one of the most prominent characters in the third season of the G1 cartoon.
Fast forward 40 years and a new incarnation of Scourge has appeared in Cyberworld. Instead of being a hovercraft, the designers took a cue from his name and head design and created a "Pirate Ship" version of the character. This is an inspired take on the character with its origins in the phrase "Scourge of the Seven Seas", a reference to the infamous pirate, Blackbeard!
Packaging
Scourge is packaged in the standard open Cyberworld box. It features the figure held down against the cardboard backing with rubber ties. His sword is to his right and his Energon pieces to the left. The background of the packaging is white with hex patterns repeating in the background. Some lightning like patterns overlay the hex patterns. The side of the box features partial artwork of Scourge, focused on his head. Meanwhile, the section that wraps around the front of the box features him in vehicle mode next to the "Transformers Cyberworld" logo. Next to the figure on the box is a "Quick Change" logo showing that he transforms in two steps. Towards the top is an ocean icon, indicating where Scourge operates.
The back of the packaging shows Scourge in both modes and Megatron riding on top of him in vehicle mode. Underneath that are cosells for Hound and Shockwave. Overall this packaging is very bright and eye catching and the wonderful teal and purple colors on the figure also help the figure stand out from other toys on shelves with more muted colors.
Accessories
As part of the "Energon Surge" sub-line of Cyberworld, Scourge includes several accessories which are made of translucent plastic, evoking the appearance of Energon crystals. A couple of his accessories are also meant to call back to his pirate theme. Here's a rundown:
Scimitar
Scourge's main melee weapon is his scimitar, a type of sword sometimes used by pirates in movies. The edge and sides of the blade have an almost "rocky" appearance, making it look like it was sculpted out of Energon crystals instead of being forged metal. This piece is made of translucent purple plastic. The middle of the blade on either side features glow-in-the-dark paint. The scimitar features a 5mm handle for Scourge to hold the weapon and 5mm ports on either side of the hilt. More on that in a bit.
Sail/Cannon
Part of the vehicle mode becomes a combination shield/weapon in robot mode. The sail from the vehicle mode detaches and the part with the sails on it look like a shield while the base is the cannon. The cannon has a port to fit a Blast Effect and there is a 5mm port on top of the cannon barrel to fit additional accessories. The top of the shield/cannon piece has a 5mm port and the bar forming the top part of the sail has 5mm ports on either side so you can attach the Energon Armor pieces to it in vehicle mode. This piece is painted teal with a purple Decepticon symbol painted on the lower sail.
Shoulder Armor
Two of the "Energon Armor" pieces have distinct shapes that remind me of a Whelk from a certain angle. These are meant to be used on his shoulders in robot mode and they feature a design with several curved shapes leading up to spikes on top. The middle features a sun-like design that also looks inspired by Whelk shells. Each armor piece is made of translucent purple plastic with no deco. Each piece features a 5mm port on the front and back while a 5mm peg is found on the back.
Leg Armor
The leg armor pieces are the ones that most resemble Energon crystals. Each piece looks like a cluster of crystals in roughly a "V" shape. Each piece is made of translucent purple plastic and features a 5mm peg on the inside.
In an odd choice, the packaging shows that you can combine the Energon Armor pieces and the scimitar to form an "Energon Crystal", but this is absent from the instructions. This piece can be "powered up" inside the chest of Bumblebee Power Spark (another figure in this sub-line). The shoulder armor attaches to the ports on the scimitar, and then the leg armor attaches to the shoulder armor. The pegs and ports hold together well enough, but they can fall apart fairly easily if you start knocking this around as a weapon.
Robot Mode
Scourge's robot mode takes influences from man different places. Let's go section by section:
- Head: The robot head has a "helmet" section around the face that resembles a Tricorne hat, sometimes worn by pirates in fiction. The face is based on G1 Scourge's face complete with mustache and beard. The left eye is covered by an eyepatch, a detail often ascribed to pirates in fictional stories.
- Chest: The chest can open up to reveal a Skull and Bones design (aka a Jolly Roger). This is often associated with pirates in fiction. This also seems to be a kind of callback to the way Optimus Prime's chest opened to reveal his Matrix Chamber.
- Arms: The designers decided to have some fun with the name "Scourge" when designing this figure. The arms are based on the design of Rise of the Beasts Scourge complete with angled shoulder armor and rounded, almost organic looking forearms. There are small "bat-wing" like embellishments on the shoulders which seem original to this version of Scourge.
- Legs: Like the arms, the legs take inspiration from Rise of the Beasts Scourge. This is most notable on the knee armor and lower legs, which feature a curved pattern with a raised section in the middle. The sides feature thrusters and more bat-wing designs, calling back to the arms.
I absolutely love the sculpt of this robot mode. Between the callbacks to previous characters named Scourge and the unique pirate ship details there's a lot to love here if you're into more "out there" concepts for Transformers figures.
Scourge is made up of purple, translucent purple and two shades of teal plastic. Paint colors include silver, purple and red. Silver is used on the chest and face. Purple is used inside the chest and on the head. His one "visible" eye is painted red in true Decepticon fashion.
There are six points of articulation on this figure. Unfortunately the knee joints do not let the leg bend all the way but given the limited articulation in this line I'll take it. I do wish he had elbow joints however. They would add a lot to the figure. There are eight 5mm ports in this mode (including the hands). Two of them are on the shoulders and another two are on the legs. These are usually taken up by his Energon Armor. The forearm ports are the perfect place to attach his Sail/Cannon. The front end of the vehicle mode becomes the chest, and it may look odd just sticking out in front but press the teal section under it and the two halves will swing open! This reveals the skull and bones inside and crystals on the sides. I actually prefer having the panels open as they look very dramatic!
Transformation to Vehicle Mode
- Detach all the accessories and set them aside for now.
- Close the chest up if open.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the arms up.
- Push the lower legs together.
- Push the chest up and the figure will "auto-transform" with the arms swinging back and the robot head sinking into the chest.
- Push the arms against the back of the legs.
- Attach the sail to the peg in the middle of the boat.
- The Energon Armor pieces can be attached to the sides and the scimitar to the front.
Vehicle Mode
Scourge's vehicle mode is an 18th Century style pirate ship. It features a shape that comes to a point in front while the back is wide with windows indicating living areas. There are some spectacular sculpted details in this form. This includes chains on the sides, horizontal lines that seem to indicate wood panels and he even has windows and ports, a couple of which look like they have cannons sticking out of them! Another beautiful detail is found on the top of the ship where the main deck has small rectangles sculpted to represent wood panels. Towards the back are the thrusters from the robot mode legs and bat-wing like designs on them. The bat-wings from the robot arms are set more towards the middle of the vehicle. This sculpt is absolutely fantastic. I love all the small details that nod to real life ships from another time.
This mode features all the same colors as the robot mode, but we get a bit more teal in the front to the middle. The teal painted sail piece takes center place now especially with the Decepticon symbol on it. I only wish that some paint details were used to highlight the sculpted details such as the cannons and wood panels. Honestly, I would love to see this mode with a different deco that looks more like a real life ship with wood colors and silver for parts like the chains.
The Energon Armor pieces can be attached to the sides which adds to the nautical appearance of the vehicle. The scimitar can be attached to the front. I can imagine him using it to slice into other ships to take them down! In another fun feature, you can take the shoulder armor pieces and attach them to the pegs on the top of the sail. They can then be used as "handles" for smaller figures like Megatron to hold as he stands on the back of the ship. Sure the scale of this does not make a whole lot of sense, but it's a fun extra feature!
Final Thoughts
Cyberworld toys are not for everyone. Their articulation is extremely limited and the decos are nowhere near the level of a Generations deco. However, I for one love this figure. Making Scourge into a pirate ship is a brilliant idea and I'm amazed it had not happened sooner. The sculpt on this figure is fantastic and I love the play features. If you're into Cyberworld, this is a must have. If not, I honestly hope we get a Generations style figure of this design one day!

- Fun play features including the spring loaded chest compartment and the Energon Armor.

- The deco needs a lot more applications to really emphasize the wonderful sculpted details.
- Lacks articulation. Just adding the elbows would have gone a long way.
