Background:
In 2026 Takara Tomy announced a follow up series to 2025's Wild King. The sequel series, named Wild King W focused on a new central character named Rexblade who wielded the "Rexcalibur" sword and had the ability to combine with other Transformers. Rex Blade was offered in two different ways: one as an individually packaged figure and the other as a two pack with Silvertail. In the story of Wild King W Rexblade and Silvertail awoke together and Silvertail serves as one of Rexblade's "Seven Spears", a special team of warriors under his command. Interestingly, while Rexblade and Silvertail are meant to be the lead protagonists of the story, they are not Autobots or Maximals. Instead, they belong to different groups. Rexblade is an "Energy Master" while Silvertail is of the Animal Tribe. I purchased the two pack so this review will cover both Rexblade and Silvertail. Both of these figures were also available individually packaged.

"In Box (Back)"

Packaging:
Takara Tomy is well known for some spectacular packaging and Rexblade with Silvertail is no different. Both are packaged in a large, rectangular box. The front has a window cut out in the shape of a "W", representing the "W" in the series title. Both figures are in robot mode inside sitting in a plastic tray. Rexblade is on the left and Silvertail is on the right (if you are facing the box). The Wild King W logo sits on the upper left and under that is Japanese text and photos of Rexblade in both of his alt-modes. On the other side is Silvertail in beast mode and under that is a view of Rexblade combined with Silvertail.

The back of the box is full of text. Using Google Translate, I translated a picture of the back of the box. Keep in mind as great as it is, Google Translate isn't always perfect. The text along the top appears to say "Let's make it wild with your own hands!" (I know, I know). The text above Rexblade describes him as an Energy Master and says "The legendary hero awakens from a long slumber. Transformable into three modes to suit the battle situation. Unleash your true power through the bonds with your comrades!". On the other side Silvertail's information says "A wolf-like warrior who awakened alongside the hero. He can alter the properties of water to create ice. He skillfully wields his tail sword to outmaneuver his opponents!". It also notes "You can attach the Tail to the wolf!". On the lower right it shows several other members of the team combined with Rexblade.

The packaging is beautiful and represents the kind of enthusiasm and bombast that Takara Tomy excels at.

Rexblade Review

Accessories:
Rexblade includes three accessories, but if you wanted to really get technical he has seven. Both his arms can detach right under the shoulders and both his feet can detach. However, they are not really meant to be weapons or anything like that. Instead, they detach for his Combiner Torso form, so I'm not really counting them as accessories.

Rexcalibur:
Rexcalibur is Rexblade's primary weapon (and his tail in beast mode). This sword is about 6.75 inches (17.14 cm) long, making it over half of the height of Rexblade himself! The blade is serrated, with large sections sticking out towards the base. This piece was clearly made for attachments. It features three 5mm pegs at the bottom (two set at angles, one pointing down). Right above the hilt are five 5mm ports. Then right above that are 5mm pegs on either side. Then above that is another 5mm port. This piece is made of blue plastic with gold paint used on the edges and middle of the blade.

Back Pack:
Rexblade's back pack appears to be a multi-purpose accessory. In his robot mode, it attaches to his back and looks almost like a flight back, complete with vents on the back with angled blades pointing upward. In his Combiner form it can fold open to be used as a hand/claw attachment to one of his arms. This piece features a port with two circles and an opening in between them on one side. On the other it has a 5mm peg in the middle and two others on the sides. When you fold it open there are two more pegs revealed. This piece is made of silver plastic with no paint applications.

Headgear:
The headgear piece is not exactly a helmet. It looks more like an added bit of detail that you can add to the head in Combiner mode. This piece features a section that wraps around the back of the robot head and two thin fins that angle upward. When Rexblade is not in Combiner Torso mode, this can be attached to the underside of the dinosaur head on his chest for storage. This piece is made of blue plastic with red paint on the edges of the fins.

"Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
Rexblade is one of the most unique Transformers to come out in 2026. Unlike anything from Generations or Cyberworld, this design moves away from the traditional blocky Transformers designs and instead embraces an aesthetic closer to what you would see in the Zoids toy line. Since one of his modes is a dinosaur, there are beast mode parts that are very obvious in this mode. Combined with the mechanical parts that make up his body and some of the vehicle mode details, this mash up of machine and beast feels very "Zoid-like" in its design. I really love how unusual he looks. I'm a fan of Transformers designs that look unique and Rexblade definitely qualifies!

Rexblade has some really unusual proportions. His legs are very long and then his arms are kind of short relative to the legs. He does kind of look strange at first, but you get used to it fairly quickly. I love the combination of vehicle and beast mode bits. His shoulders have wheels on them while his feet have giant dinosaur claws. There are some nice armor details including his shoulder armor having angled pieces in front and his head design looks very cool, almost like a robot head with a headband wrapped around the forehead. If we were to ascribe "Optimus Prime-esque" details to any "good guy" leader, Rexblade's face does have a very Prime-like mouth plate and eyes. There are fins that come up behind his head are reminiscent of Optimus Prime's antennae too. I'm sure these design elements are no coincidence.

Rexblade is made up of blue, black and silver plastic. Blue makes up most of the figure with silver used on many of the joints and black used for the wheel sections. Paint colors on the figure include gold, red, silver and metallic green. The gold is used to color parts like the claws on his feet, the knee armor and parts of the shoulders and head. Red paint is mostly found on his chest and head. The metallic green is used on details on the top of his shoulders. Silver is used for details like his fists and the sides of the wheels that are exposed in this mode. The colors look great overall and I love how the blue is broken up by the black and silver.

"Robot Mode (Close up)"

There are twenty points of articulation on this figure including five in each arm and four in each leg (including an ankle tilt). Each fist features a 5mm port, allowing him to hold his sword.

Due in part to his unique transformation scheme and his aesthetics, Rexblade's design is very different than your average Transformers figure, especially those based on G1 characters. He does not have a blocky core with rectangles and squares forming a bulk of his limbs. Instead, his arms are basically formed from the front wheels of the vehicle mode and his legs are formed from the rear of the vehicle mode (and the dinosaur legs of course). As mentioned above, his arms and feet can detach for his Combiner mode, but unfortunately that also means they can accidentally detach fairly easily. For instance, when I was trying to pose Rexblade and use his ankle tilt, the feet popped off almost every time. The same can be said for the arms. The main issue is that both sections attach to the main body using the same joint which are basically two pegs with a bar in the middle. In theory the bar in the middle and two pegs (instead of one) should really hold together better than they do. This is especially annoying with the arms, because the piece they connect to swings into the shoulder as part of the transformation to vehicle mode. In this mode however, as you try to reattach the arms you have to hold the silver piece in place which can be a tad tricky. These parts coming off so easily is the greatest weakness of an otherwise cool figure.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode (Starting in Robot Mode):

  1. Detach the sword and headgear if attached and set them aside for now.
  2. Attach the back pack or keep it attached if you already have it connected.
  3. Swing the forearms and elbows up into the shoulders to form the front wheels of the vehicle mode.
  4. Swing the robot head down into the dinosaur head on his chest.
  5. Swing out the middle of the body at the hinge on the silver section.
  6. Point the claws on his feet down.
  7. Rotate the lower body around.
  8. Swing the lower legs back.
  9. On the inside of each knee area is a 5mm port. Move each leg up so that the port on the knees aligns with the peg sticking out to the side from the back pack. At the same time, you need to line up the slots on the inside of the thigh joint to the tabs on the piece in between the legs.
  10. Swing the knee armor pieces back.
  11. Swing the beast mode head back, push the neck hinges down and point the head forward.
  12. Each of the front wheels is connected to a hinged piece. Swing the wheels forward and swing them back (using the hinged piece).
  13. Connect the sword to the back by connecting one of the angled pegs at the base and the port in the middle of the back pack.
  14. Connect the headgear to the base of the sword.
  15. Be sure the front wheel well pieces are lifted a bit so the wheels can spin.

"Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
Rexblade's vehicle mode is, well...a dinosaur car. This is a very unusual form for any Transformers figure but it does remind me of both Mechatron and Collaborative Boneshaker. Functionally he's definitely a car, but his dinosaur head makes up a good chunk of the vehicle mode's front end and his dinosaur tail and feet form a large portion of the back. While his a car, this is not a vehicle meant for passengers. The front wheels are covered by the robot mode shoulder armor and the rear wheels are covered by parts of the legs and feet. The middle mostly features the "back pack" and the sword. This is a really weird vehicle, but I love it. I can imagine this thing racing down the battlefield as the dinosaur head roars and scares the Energon out of enemies!

Color-wise there are no surprises here. Since there's no "car shell" or anything covering up bits, almost every part you see here was already exposed in robot mode. This means the blue plastic makes up most of the vehicle with smaller parts featuring silver plastic. His wheels are black plastic with silver paint on the sides. The deco is still very striking and I do like how the metallic green from the shoulders now seem to take the form of headlights.

Rexblade rolls on all four tires in this mode. They're wide tires so he's very stable. No worries about scraping the bottom of the vehicle either thanks to the tires being fairly high. There are eight 5mm ports in this mode. Two are found on either side of the dinosaur head and two are on each front wheel well. That said, you can't attach eight weapons at once since the ports are fairly close together.

Transformation to Beast Mode (from Robot Mode):

  1. Detach the sword and headgear if attached.
  2. Push each lower arm and elbow section up into the shoulder sections.
  3. Push the robot head down into the beast mode head.
  4. Swing the beast mode head up to get it out of the way for now.
  5. Separate the middle silver section by swinging the top part up while holding the lower body. There will be a very mild "snap" when you do this.
  6. Swing the upper body back, connecting the central peg on the back pack accessory to the corresponding port on the back of the waist section.
  7. Swing the legs forward and bend them at the knee, then swing the knee armor piece back.
  8. Move the dinosaur arms out a bit, then up.
  9. Swing the front wheel sections back.
  10. Swing the beast mode head down.
  11. Attach the sword/tail to the back.
  12. Attach the headgear to the tail at the base.

"Beast Mode"

Beast Mode:
There have been a lot of Transformers T-Rex toys over the years, but not all of them had an aesthetic like this. Something about the combination of the big, chunky wheels on his shoulders and hips alongside all the angled parts like his tail, claws and knee armor give Rexblade an awesomely unique appearance that really makes the toy distinct from its fellow Transformers figures. While much of his body is filled with angled bits, his beast mode head has some curves too such as the top of the head. This mode also lets you open up his mouth to see the sculpted teeth inside. This mode also gives us a look at the beast mode arms which have a really nice set of details sculpted into them including the claws at the end. Rexblade is one fierce looking beast and I really dig this mode.

No surprises with colors here, but the beast mode head does get to shine front and center. It basically encompasses all the colors of the figure including blue and silver plastic with red, gold and metallic green paint details. The gold is really striking in this mode and I think he looks great.

There are thirteen points of articulation in this mode. Each leg has four and his neck/head has three. His dino arms can move up and down. The only real attachment points for accessories are the sword/tail, but he looks awesome without them so it's no big deal to me.

Transformation to Torso Mode (from Robot Mode):

  1. Detach the feet and set them aside.
  2. Detach the arms at the elbows and set them side.
  3. Move the top half of the wheels on the shoulders so it is under the wheel well, then swing the piece in back down to hold the top half of the wheels in place.
  4. Swing the beast mode lower jaw down.
  5. Swing the panels on the sides of the beast mode head forward.
  6. Swing the lower legs back.
  7. Swing the knee armor up over the wheel on the legs.
  8. Adjust the leg position so the dual pegs under each knee armor piece points down.
  9. Attach the headgear to the back of his head.
  10. The dual peg connection points are where you would attach any of the Energy Beast limbs.
  11. The foot pieces attach to the bottom of the leg Energy Beast limbs.
  12. The "back pack" can be unfolded and attached to one of the arms as a bladed "hand".
  13. The ports around the dinosaur head and in the lower jaw are for the chest plates included with the Energy Beasts.
  14. While not an official part of the transformation, the lower arm pieces can be attached to the top of the shoulders.

"Combiner Mode"

Torso Mode:
I have to say, when Rexblade is combined with four Energy Beasts he looks amazing. The designers were very smart about having angled parts all over the figure from his shoulders to his head to his knees. These all create a sleek and dynamic appearance even if he's just standing there. Instead of this Combiner mode forming a new entity (like Superion or Bruticus) it seems Rexblade's mind remains in control with the Energy Beasts working with him (so there is still a mental fusion element it seems). Any Energy Beasts will work as limbs, but of course using members of his "Seven Spears" group makes the most sense.

Functionally there is good news and bad news. The actual combination is fun and looks great in the end. But when you try to move the various limbs, there is a tendency for bits to fall off. The two pieces that fall off the most for me are the arms (either side) or his feet. Oddly, any Energy Beasts serving as his legs tend to stay attached. Fortunately, the ports on either side of the shoulders/front wheel wells are nice and tight, allowing you to attach extra bits like the beast heads from the Energy Beasts or additional weapons.

Final Thoughts on Rexblade:
Rexblade attempts to move away from traditional Transformers aesthetics to create a fun and awesome looking figure. For the most part, it succeeds. The aesthetic is more Zoids than Transformers in many ways but that's a good thing. I think the Transformers toy line needs to stretch its limits now and then and from an aesthetic standpoint, this figure succeeds beautifully. However, from a functional standpoint I really wish the arms and feet had better mechanisms to attach to the main body. Perhaps a clip to lock them in place or something would have been best. I really like Rexblade with his fun vehicle mode and awesome aesthetics, but functionally he could have been better.

Silvertail Review

Accessories:
Silvertail includes three accessories:

Wolf Head:
As with so many Energy Beasts in Wild King, the head of the beast mode is a separate accessory. In this case it is a beautifully sculpted wolf head. The Wild King aesthetic of a mechanical creature looking almost organic is intact here. The snout is curved, ears triangle shaped and there are layers of "fur" on the neck area. However, the brow down to the nose seems to have an armor plate on it and on the sides of the cheeks are lines that look almost like vents. This piece is made of white and silver plastic with blue and black paint details. The back features pegs that allow you to attach it to the Energy Beast bodies or the Energy Masters. In a fun detail, the lower jaw can swing down to reveal a 5mm ring that allows you to slide his tail in as a sword weapon in beast mode! I love this little touch and it looks cool.

Chest Armor:
This Chest Armor piece is the same as the one originally included with Hydrophant. It is made of light blue plastic with a beautiful metallic blue paint on the front. This features a 5mm peg in the back.

Tail/Sword:
Silvertail's beast mode tail also forms his main weapon in robot mode. This piece features a base piece with two pegs that attach to Silvertail himself and the "tail" doubles as a sword blade. Another 5mm peg acts as a handle for the sword in robot mode. This piece is made of white plastic with light blue paint on the tail/sword edges.

"Silvertail in Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
The foundation of Silvertail's design is the main body originally used for Captain Volca. The upper arms, torso, waist area and thighs all come from that design. His head, forearms and lower legs are new pieces. Interestingly, the Wiki says these parts are from Ignite Leo and Frost Saber but looking at those figures their paws/hands do not look the same. On those figures they have paws with claws on them but the "paw" sections on this figure have horizontal bands that wrap around the paw. These bands do not appear on Ignite Leo or Frost Saber.

Silvertail's head sculpt looks like a robotic version of his beast mode head. It features a "helmet" section that seems to have tufts of "fur" sculpted into it. The top of the "helmet" section is sculpted with angled designs that evoke the beast mode ears and snout.

This figure is made up of light blue, white and silver plastic. Blue mostly makes up the chest, upper arms and thighs. White makes up the forearms and lower legs while silver forms parts in between like the knees. This was a great choice as it helps break up the colors. Paint colors on the figure include gold, light blue, black and white.

There are seventeen points of articulation in this mode. This includes four in each arm and leg. Unfortunately he does not have head articulation (a commonality among the Energy Beasts). There are fifteen 5mm ports all over this figure from the arms to the back to the legs. These serve various purposes. For instance, the ones on the chest are to attach his Chest Armor. The ones on the sides of his arms are used to store his beast mode head. You can then attach his weapon to his fists or even store it on his back. In many respects, Wild King Energy Beasts remind me of the old Robotech Robolinks (aka Blockman) figures which were each used as building blocks to form vehicles, larger robots and structures all by adding accessories to them.

Transformation to Beast Mode:

  1. Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
  2. Swing each leg back at the knee joint, then swing the lower legs (the rear beast mode legs) forward.
  3. Push the legs together in the middle.
  4. Rotate the lower body around.
  5. Swing the back panel out, swing the head forward into the chest cavity and then swing the back piece bac into place.
  6. Swing the robot arms back, then forward and connect them together.
  7. Rotate the robot forearms to form the front legs of the beast mode.
  8. Attach the beast mode head to the ports from the top of the robot shoulders.
  9. Attach the tail to the back, using the ports on the back of the robot thighs.
  10. Attach the Chest Armor to the top.

"Beast Mode"

Beast Mode:
When it comes to the beast modes in the Wild King line, much of the detailing comes from the specific limbs created for the character and the head and tail accessories. In the case of Silvertail, his wolf-based paws, head and tail all help make this a cool looking mechanical wolf. I went over the wolf head details above. The other details that really solidify his "wolf" design are his paws which are relatively large with claws at the ends. His tail shape evokes the curved shape of a real life wolf's tail (though in real life they are more poofy).

This mode doesn't reveal any color surprises but the colors on the paws do get a bit more focus. They are each made of white plastic with blue "bands" running across them with the claws painted black.

There are six main points of articulation in this mode. Each leg can move on a hinge and I'm counting the ability for the mouth to open (to hold his sword) and the tail being able to move up and down. You cannot really strike a lot of dynamic poses in this mode, but that's par for the course when it comes to Wild King beast modes.

Transformation to Limb Mode (from Robot Mode):

  1. Detach the accessories of attached.
  2. Swing the back panel out, swing the head down, then swing the back panel back into place.
  3. Rotate each arm so it is pointing back.
  4. Rotate the forearms so the claws on the paws point up.
  5. Swing the arms up and connect them at the shoulders.
  6. Push the legs together.
  7. Swing the lower legs back. Use the heel pieces to tab into the back.
  8. The ports at the top (on the shoulder pieces) are used to connect to arm and leg connectors on Energy Masters while the bottom allows you to attach foot pieces like those from Rexblade.

"Limb Mode"

Limb Mode:
Silvertail's limb mode is the "standard" limb mode found on the Wild King Energy Beasts. You can see early examples such as Captain Volca and Leafback. The key to these are all the ports. There are ports on the lower legs and the chest area, allowing you to not only attach pieces like the feet from Rexblade to this mode, but also additional figures or the chest armor and beast mode heads included with the Energy Beasts. This adds to both the play value and aesthetics of the overall combined forms.

Final Thoughts:
When I first saw stock photos of Rexblade I really loved his aesthetic, and I still do. I also love that he's a quad-changer (robot, beast, vehicle and torso). It's great that Takara Tomy is attempting different styles of designs within the Transformers toy line and in every mode Rexblade looks spectacular. His transformations are also intuitive and fun. All that said, there are some weaknesses here, most of which are centered around parts staying attached to him. The dual peg/port system is not a terrible one, but it does not hold together in a solid way that can withstand playing around with the figure. Display? Sure, it looks incredible. But as soon as you starting posing him out the feet or a limb may fall off and that is a flaw that can't be ignored.

Silvertail is a pretty standard Energy Beast figure but I really like the wolf parts and I appreciate them adding in a way for him to hold his sword in his beast mode mouth.

Overall as a set I really do like these two, but keep in mind what I wrote about Rexblade above. As a display piece, Rexblade is aces. If you plan on thrashing him around with your other figures prepare for some disappointment. Recommended with caveats.

Pros:

  • Really beautiful packaging.
  • Rexblade looks amazing in all modes including his combined form.
  • Really strong, bold colors on Rexblade.
  • Rexblade has fun and intuitive transformations.
  • Silvertail is a fun Energy Beast with nicely sculpted beast mode parts.

Cons:

  • Articulation could be better. While there are many points of articulation, the range of motion is limited.
  • Parts falling off such as the feet is bad. I wish there had been some type of locking mechanism designed for them.
