Heroic Autobot Meteorfire
Function: Alien Interpreter
Meteorfire was once the host of ‘Alien Hunt’, a hit show on Cybertron. He gave this up after a tragedy happened to his longtime partner, Cosmos. Now he’s gearing up once again to join Bumblebee on a quest to explore Luna 3, the forbidden moon of Cybertron. Luckily knows how to communicate with aliens and more importantly, he knows how to handle himself in a fight. Both skills will be very valuable in the adventures ahead. Meteorfire uses his Galaxy Blade to fend off any alien who may threaten his Autobot allies. When he’s not crushing the alien competition, he happens to be a very friendly and approachable guy.
Packaging:
The Battle Call Transformers figures are packaged in cardboard boxes tied down to a plastic tray. The front has a huge plastic window that allows you to see almost the entire robot and its accessories. The right side has the standard black Transformers logo set against a yellow background. The Cyberverse logo is on the lower part of the box and in the left corner is the "Battle Call" description indicating it is "Voice activated play".
The back of the box features Meteorfire in both modes, calling out an eight step transformation. In the corner Meteorfire's function is called out as "Alien Interpreter", which is a very unique function in Transformers history.
Meteorfire was an original character introduced in the Cyberverse cartoon. Modeled after Steve Irwin accent and all. To date, this "Battle Call" figure is the only version of this character in the Cyberverse toy line.
Robot Mode:
Meteorfire's design looks like it started out with the classic Seeker design. He has the vertical pylons on either side behind his head near the shoulders, wings on his back, the vehicle mode cockpit forming the center of his torso and even thruster like designs on the front of the lower legs.
All that said, Meteorfire has many design elements all his own. The head design has a distinct crest and "horns" on his head similar to the ones that G1 Prowl has. He even has small antennae on the sides of his head, making for a unique yet very Transformers-esque design. His shoulders have armor on them that points upward and his forearms have turbines built into them. The figure has many of the key elements of the animation model, but in the cartoon his proportions are much bulkier.
Despite its price point, the "Battle Call" figures are not lavished with paint deco. Meteorfire is made up of blue, translucent blue, white, yellow and grey plastic. It may not seem obvious at first, but he appears to have some deco influence from the Japanese warrior Diatlas. Paint colors on the figure include blue, silver, grey and yellow. Compared to the animation model there are a lot of details missing. This includes yellow (or orange) on his head, blue on the shoulder armor, blue on the hips (and a "belt buckle" detail that is not found on this figure) and blue trim on the wings. Overall the deco is okay, but I feel like this figure would have looked a lot better with additional paint detailing.
There are ten points of articulation on this figure including three in each arm and two in each leg. Oddly the head is screwed into the neck piece so there is no head articulation. Meteorfire includes several translucent blue accessories that you can attach to him. He has two small tonfas (that look like blades) that attach to his firearms. Another piece covers the head and chest. Two "L" shaped pieces attach to the ends of his wings. This really does add a nice visual punch to the figure that it really needs due to all the white plastic.
The other key feature of this figure is the "Battle Call" feature which is...I guess, different is the best way to put it. Near the left shoulder is a switch. Move it to the "On" position and a light goes on in the chest. Then talk to (or even just blow) on the chest and a sensor makes the light get brighter, lighting up the whole torso area more. Do that enough times and the color will change and the light will flash. It's a rather dramatic effect.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach all the accessories and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the robot feet up into the lower legs.
- Swing the back panel up over the head and snap it into place.
- Rotate the wings back.
- Both arms are connected by a bar on a hinge, swing that back.
- Connect the slots on the arms to the tabs on the wings.
- Push the lower legs together.
- Swing the hip section back and connect the back of the legs to the back panel.
Vehicle Mode:
Meteorfire's vehicle mode is a spaceship with an interesting and bulky design. There are suggestions of a sleek vehicle mode including the angled, backswept wings and smaller fins that sweep forward to points at the end. The cockpit section is angled in the front and the main body of the vehicle is very thick, suggesting he could be a cargo carrier or passenger liner of some sort (I'm just using my imagination here, that's not how he used his alt mode in the show). In some ways, this form reminds me of G1 Skyhammer's vehicle "shell" which was also a bulky vehicle with hover fans on the wings.
There are no color surprises in this mode. The yellow does get concentrated towards the front and we get a better look at the silver on his tail fins but that's about it. I really wish the wings had at least some blue on the edges to break up all the white color.
You can attach the "L" shaped accessories to the ends of the wings and the tonfas to the arms. The head/chest armor piece attaches to the back area in the middle of the vehicle. It sits at an angle but does hold in nice and snug.
Final Thoughts:
Meteorfire is an okay figure, and to be fair from Spring to the time I'm writing this (January 2022) he sold out everywhere. He did not last very long on toy store shelves so clearly someone found him cool enough to purchase (including yours truly). That said, I honestly do not feel this was worth the original $24.99 price point. The figure itself is basically a glorified Warrior Class with some extra bits with lights. As features go I would have preferred a missile launcher or something more action oriented. That said, I can see how younger fans may find this fun, and if you can get it at a discounted price even better but I cannot whole heartedly recommend this figure.
Pros:
- A rare new character in a Transformers toy line.
- An interesting sculpt that has many classic Transformers elements mixed into a new design.
- Nice color choices.
Cons:
- Limited articulation.
- Could use a lot more deco.
- The "Battle Call" feature is neat but not worth the extra cost.
