"Legacy United" Geocron In Box (Back)

Background:
In 1986, the Gobots toy line expanded with a sub-brand known as "Rock Lords". This line featured creatures who changed from rocks to humanoid, monster or animal-like forms. This line even inspired appearances and references in Transformers lore. Now as part of Legacy United a new type of Transformers figure has emerged inspired by the Rock Lords! Following the play pattern of figures like Cog, Ractonite and Crashbar these Rock Lords-inspired figures are known as "Armorizers". Geocron is a reteool and redeco of one of the first Infernac figures, Bouldercrash. Check out that review for my thoughts on this base sculpt. This review will focus on the changes made to the figure for this release.

Packaging:
Geocron is packaged in a standard sized Core Class box. The box is rectangular with a large flap on top. The background looks like dark blue machinery with some yellow and orange lights. The top flap shows Geocron in vehicle mode with the Generations logo next to it. The main part of the box shows the figure through a open window shaped with jagged edges that look kind of like the edges of rocks. To the right is the Transformers logo and under Geocron is the Legacy: United logo and below that is Geocron's name with "Infernac Universe" over it. The back of the box shows the figure in both modes calling out a ten step transformation. It also shows off the "Armorizer" feature.

Accessory:
Geocron includes a sword accessory. The blade sits on a hinge connected to a hilt/handle that also doubles as part of the vehicle mode's front end. The blade is triangular with details on the side that look like lava poured down the blade, then cooled. The hilt/handle section is curved and features some asymmetrical designs on it, also looking like rock. This accessory is made of a metallic brown plastic (which has less of a red tint than Bouldercrash) with purple paint applications, mostly on the blade with some on the base. The sword handle is a small 3mm peg on the bottom. The sword blade defaults to being swing forward, but it can be positioned straight up or back for the vehicle mode.

Geocron (Robot Mode)

Robot Mode:
Geocron shares the same body as Bouldercrash featuring asymmetrical, rocky details from head to feet (I'm not sure he actually has toes). I mentioned in my review of Bouldercrash that I really liked this "rocky" and asymmetrical aesthetic and I still do but I am still bothered by the giant bar that runs down his back. I really do wish it had been designed to retract or fold in some way. According to Hasbro designer Evan Brooks, the head sculpt for Geocron is based directly on the rock creatures seen in the Headmaster episode "My Friend Sixshot!". Looking at it from that lens, this head sculpt totally succeeds with evil looking eyes, an open mouth and a very flat, rocky appearance. Between this head sculpt and Bouldercrash's I'd say I prefer Bouldercrash's head design but I totally appreciate the homage to the animated series.

Geocron features two shades of metallic brown plastic. Most of the body is made of a lighter color while smaller parts like his wheels and shoulder joints are a darker shade. I love the use of metallic plastics on this figure, suggesting some flecks of metals and mineral deposits in his rocky armor. The paint colors on this figure are metallic purple and red. The paint layout is different than the one on Bouldercrash. Geocron lacks the "veins" of "lava" seen on Bouldercrash. Instead, his colors are more straightforward with purple paint on the knees, chest and back. The eyes are painted red.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the sword and set it aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Swing the wheel section on the back over the head.
  4. Swing the chest panel up.
  5. Swing each arm back and attach them to the bar on the back.
  6. Rotate the lower body around.
  7. Move each leg up (bending it at the knee) and connect the tabs near the ankles to the corresponding slots on the handle/bar on the back of the figure.
  8. Rotate the front section of the vehicle around.
  9. On the sword accessory, swing the sword blade back, then attach it to the front of the vehicle, covering up the robot head.
  10. Snap the sword blade into the handle/bar on the back of the robot.

"Legacy United" Geocron

Vehicle Mode:
Geocron is a a "trike" (a three wheeled motorcycle) in vehicle mode. It also has some stylings of a Ninja style motorcycle. It's not the most sleek vehicle you'll ever see but I think it is fun and unusual (which are both positives in my book).

This mode features both shades of metallic brown plastic seen in the robot mode but we get to see the darker wheels a bit better. The front "headlight" is painted red and purple details are found from the front to the back (I'm counting the sword blade as "in the back"). The use of purple is interesting to me. I'm not sure this was intentional but traditionally purple is associated with Decepticons while red (found on Bouldercrash) is associated with Autobots. The dichotomy is fun even if not intentional.

This mode rolls on all three wheels. There are no attachment points for accessories. At first I thought the front wheel had 5mm ports on it but they are too small to fit weapons with 5mm pegs.

"Legacy United" Geocron in weapon mode (with Chop Shop)

Armorizer Mode:
Geocron's "Armorizer" mode is a weapon: a sword. Starting with the figure in vehicle mode, swing the sword blade up and...that's it. Larger figures can hold the sword by the 5mm peg at the end of the handle from the back of the robot mode. This is one bulky sword and it kind of works as a weapon but I wish the main body of the figure collapsed down more somehow (though at a Core Class price point, I'm not sure how they'd manage that).

Final Thoughts:
Geocron is not likely to make anyone's Top 5 Figures of the Year list, but I think this little guy is fun. He's not perfect. You have this big bar on his back and his sword mode is not particularly elegant, but I appreciate the homage and intent behind this figure. Recommended if you're into the whole "Armorizer" play pattern.

Pros:

  • Cool sculpted details. I appreciate the "rocky" look and asymmetry.
  • Nice deco.
  • Cool homage to a Japanese Headmasters episode.
  • Good articulation and intuitive transformation.

Cons:

  • If I mention the bar on his back one more time you'll probably scream yet here I am mentioning it again.
