Packaging:
Bouldercrash is packaged in a standard sized Core Class box. The box is rectangular with a large flap on top. The background looks like dark blue machinery with some yellow and orange lights. The top flap shows Bouldercrash in vehicle mode with the Generations logo next to it. The main part of the box shows Bouldercrash through a open window shaped with jagged edges that look kind of like the edges of rocks. To the right is the Transformers logo and under Bouldercrash is the Legacy: United logo and below that is Bouldercrash's name with "Infernac Universe" over it. The back of the box shows the figure in both modes calling out a ten step transformation. It also shows off the "Armorizer" feature.
Background:
In 1986, the Gobots toy line expanded with a sub-brand known as "Rock Lords". This line featured creatures who changed from rocks to humanoid, monster or animal-like forms. This line even inspired appearances and references in Transformers lore. Now as part of Legacy United a new type of Transformers figure has emerged inspired by the Rock Lords! Following the play pattern of figures like Cog, Ractonite and Crashbar these Rock Lords-inspired figures are known as "Armorizers". In another nod to the 80's, the "Infernac" universe is a reference to the 80's cartoon The Inhumanoids.
Accessory:
Bouldercrash includes a sword accessory. The blade sits on a hinge connected to a hilt/handle that also doubles as part of the vehicle mode's front end. The blade is triangular with details on the side that look like lava poured down the blade, then cooled. The hilt/handle section is curved and features some asymmetrical designs on it, also looking like rock. This accessory is made of brown plastic with red paint applications, mostly on the blade. The sword handle is a small 3mm peg on the bottom. The sword blade defaults to being swing forward, but it can be positioned straight up or back for the vehicle mode.
Robot Mode:
The conceit of the Armorizers is that they are rocky creatures who also maintain some of the aesthetics of traditional Transformers figures. In this case Bouldercrash definitely fits both concepts. On the one hand the figure has a very Transformers-style head with distinctive "helmet" and "face" sections. The face has visor eyes and a mouthplate, also very traditional. The details on the body look like rocks including lots of uneven surfaces and asymmetrical designs. At the same time there are very traditional Transformers designs like the front wheel of the vehicle mode sitting on the back and wheels attached to each lower leg. I really love this mash up aesthetic.
I will say, as much as I like the sculpting on this figure, some fans may not dig one major detail: the giant bar/handle on the back. I wish the bar folded up or something, but on the other hand you can use it as a stand to prop the figure up in different poses so I guess it is not a total loss.
Bouldercrash is made up of two shades of brown plastic: a reddish brown and a more neutral brown. Paint details are done in red and copper paint. Red is used for lines running through Bouldercrash's body that look like veins of molten lava. Meanwhile the copper is used for the faceplate, giving the character a metallic appearance. I would have liked one or two more of these red lines on the figure, especially on the back but I love the ones that are there.
There are ten points of articulation on this figure. That includes two in each arm and leg. The joints on the arms and legs are ball joints, so there is a good range of motion. Each fist has a 3mm port, allowing the figure to hold the sword in either hand.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach the sword and set it aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the wheel section on the back over the head.
- Swing the chest panel up.
- Swing each arm back and attach them to the bar on the back.
- Rotate the lower body around.
- Move each leg up (bending it at the knee) and connect the tabs near the ankles to the corresponding slots on the handle/bar on the back of the figure.
- Rotate the front section of the vehicle around.
- On the sword accessory, swing the sword blade back, then attach it to the front of the vehicle, covering up the robot head.
- Snap the sword blade into the handle/bar on the back of the robot.
Vehicle Mode:
Bouldercrash's vehicle mode is a trike, a three wheeled motorcycle. While much of the surface of the vehicle is rocky looking, the actual shape looks like this is meant to be more of a Ninja style motorcycle, especially given the somewhat sleek looking front end. The giant blade on back looks kind of cool but it works against the vehicle having any kind of real seat. That said, Bouldercrash is hardly a "robot in disguise" so I think we can safely assume the vehicle is more of a practical matter than anything else.
This mode is mostly brown in color with some red thanks to the sword blade and smaller red "lava flow" details. This mode actually gives us a better look at the two shades of brown plastic on this figure. Most of it is a reddish brown color while some smaller parts like the wheels are more like a mud shaped brown. There are also some copper paint details on the front of the vehicle showing off machinery. I do wish some of the red had been used on the sides of the wheels, but other than that the deco looks good.
This mode rolls on all three wheels. There are no attachment points for accessories. At first I thought the front wheel had 5mm ports on it but they are too small to fit weapons with 5mm pegs.
Armorizer Mode:
Bouldercrash's "Armorizer" mode is a weapon: a sword. Starting with the figure in vehicle mode, swing the sword blade up and...that's it. Larger figures can hold the sword by the 5mm peg at the end of the handle from the back of the robot mode. This is one bulky sword and it kind of works as a weapon but I wish the main body of the figure collapsed down more somehow (though at a Core Class price point, I'm not sure how they'd manage that).
Final Thoughts:
Bouldercrash is a fun little figure, but how much you will enjoy it will largely depend on how much you buy into the idea of the Amorizers to begin with. I personally dig the idea so this is cool by me, but it's not perfect by any means. The figure can use a bit more deco in robot mode and the weapon mode is a bit of a stretch. Recommended, but I emphasize that I am predisposed towards liking the Armorizers so your mileage may vary.
Pros:
- Cool sculpt that is quite different than the typical Transformers figure.
- Nice deco concept with the "lava veins".
- Good articulation and intuitive transformation.
Cons:
- The large handle/bar on the back of the robot might be a bit much for some fans.
- I would have liked a bit more red deco on the figure.
