Background:
In 2017's live action Transformers film "The Last Knight" several Decepticons were released from prison to serve Megatron once again. One of them was a small Decepticon named Mohawk. This small Decepticon had a distinct personality and transformed into a motorcycle. In 2024 fans had a chance to add this character to their collections as a Core Class figure.

Mohawk In Box (Back)

Packaging:
Mohawk is packaged in the standard Core Class Studio Series box. The box is rectangular with a flap on top with an illustration of the character and the junkyard seen in the film. The box portion features an open window to show off most of the toy. There is no plastic window, aligning to the eco-friendly packaging of the time. Under the window is the logo for "The Last Knight". The background of the box is black while the Studio Series logo uses light blue colors. The vertical Transformers logo is on the right.

The back of the packaging mostly uses various shades of red. The figure is shown in both modes calling out a 13 step transformation. Below that section is a ton of legal information in multiple languages. The figure is bound to a cardboard insert with rubber ties.

Accessory:
Mohawk includes a knife weapon resembling a Bowie knife. The character does not actually use this weapon in the film, but it was included in concept art so Hasbro made sure to include it with this figure. The weapon features a curved side and then a side with a serrated edge. This piece is made of grey plastic. It features a small 3mm peg at the bottom and a slot on the side that allows you to attach the knife to the vehicle mode. I'm happy to see accessories included with Core Class figures and in this case I think it's very cool that a piece of concept art was used to design the weapon.

Robot Mode (Stock Photo)

Robot Mode:
Mohawk had a design that seemed to call back to Frenzy from the first live action film. He was relatively small compared to other Decepticons with a relatively lanky looking body. His motorcycle wheels were set behind his shoulders. He wasn't a Frenzy reskin however. His mechanical details mostly looked like a combination of motorcycle parts mushed together with melee weapons integrated into his body like curved blades on his forearms and claw like fingers. This figure has a lot of these details. Perhaps his most distinctive feature is the head design which looks like an Isz from "The Maxx" comic books with the round eyes of a Chameleon on the sides. On top of his head that looks like a fin you'd see on a Basilisk. Love it or hate it, this is a very unique Transformers design and this figure represents the character seen on screen very nicely.

Mohawk is made up of grey and black plastic, with the grey making up most of the figure. Paint applications are mostly in green with some white on the left arm. The eyes are painted black with red at the top. This doesn't sound like the most exciting color scheme but it is fairly screen accurate as Mohawk's on-screen counterpart was mostly just silver parts with splashes of green and red color.

There are twelve points of articulation on this figure. The shoulder and hip joints are ball joints, allowing for a good range of movement. One of the most hilarious (but screen accurate) points of articulation is the mouth! The top of his head can be moved back and forth to open his mouth wide. The character talked a lot in the film and was rather loud, so this fits his personality perfectly! Each fist has a 3mm port, allowing him to hold his knife weapon. In a hilarious homage to his final moments in the film, you can detach his head (which rests on a 5mm peg), a reference to the scene in the film where his body is destroyed but his head continues to talk.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the knife and set it aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs and close the mouth if open.
  3. Push the robot head back.
  4. Swing the wheel over the left shoulder up so it is over the robot head.
  5. Swing the wheel over the right shoulder down so it is on the back of the robot.
  6. Bend each arm up at the elbows.
  7. Rotate the arms up at the shoulder joints, then connect them to the slot and peg on the rear window.
  8. Swing the legs back, over the handlebars then back.
  9. Push the legs together, connecting them at the feet.
  10. Connect the feet to the tab on the front of the vehicle.
  11. Push the thighs in on the front of the vehicle, tabbing them into place.
  12. There is a small tab on the right side of the vehicle under the arms. The knife accessory can be attached there.

Vehicle Mode

Vehicle Mode:
In The Last Knight Mohawk transformed into a Combat Motors P51 Motorcycle. For whatever reason, Hasbro did not have the license to recreate that motorcycle faithfully. My guess? Paying that much in licensing costs for a Core Class figure hardly made sense. What Hasbro did do is create a motorcycle mode that has features that echo the P51. Unlike most motorcycles which generally have a lot of curved panels on the sides and around chunks of the middle, this motorcycle looks almost like a skeletal frame around an engine. The way the robot legs come up on the sides then angle down also evokes the P51. The rear wheel is connected to the rest of the vehicle with triangular shaped pieces that also resembles the P51. If you're not a stickler for "screen accuracy" than this vehicle mode works just fine. I think at this price point you can let the non-licensed mode go but if this were a Deluxe I may feel differently.

As you'd expect, this mode mostly shows off the grey and black plastic. The front end of the vehicle has some white and red details but for the most part the vehicle is unpainted. This isn't a huge deal if you consider the real life vehicle is mostly silver chrome and lack in color.

Final Thoughts:
Mohawk is a very atypical Transformers design. His "lizard head" and skeletal appearance may not be everyone's cup of tea but if you're looking to fill out your Decepticon forces from The Last Knight this guy will make a cool addition to your collection. He's not 100% movie accurate but the designers did their best with an unlicensed vehicle mode. Recommended with some caveats.

Pros:

  • Robot mode does look very close to the movie model.
  • Excellent detail in the sculpt.
  • I appreciate the little knife being included.

Cons:

  • Unlicensed vehicle mode is not 100% screen accurate.
  • Could have used more deco and been a lighter silver color.
