In 1987 Hasbro released a team of Decepticons known as the Terrorcons. These five creatures each transformed from a robot to some type of beast and then all five team members could combine to form the Combiner, Abominus! When Abominus' arch enemy Computron was released for "Combiner Wars", many fans wondered when Abominus would appear in the toy line. Now they have their answer as Hun-Gurrr joins the "Power of the Primes"!
Hun-Gurrr is the leader of the Terrorcons. In the G1 days, he was the last Terrorcon I purchased, years after I had bought all the other Terrorcons. I remember the joy and awe I felt when I finally assembled Abominus, and it was a fun experience to obtain Hun-Gurrr and assemble the modern day Abominus. The previous "Beast Hunters" interpretation of the character was neat, but not quite at the level of this figure.
Packaging:
Like previous waves of "Generations" Voyager Class figures, Hun-Gurrr is in a window box. The box has a black background with graphics on top. These include the Generations logo on the upper right hand corner and the vertical "Transformers" logo under it. On the other side is Hun-Gurrr's package art along with the "Power of the Primes" logo and his name underneath with a Decepticon symbol (no more symbol confusion!). The right side panel of the box features the symbols for the twelve Primes along with the "Power of the Primes" logo and the "Authentic Transformers" logo at the bottom.
The back of the packaging shows Hun-Gurrr in both modes. It also shows him using his Prime Armor attachments. The Terrorcon Enigma is also featured to the side. His transformation is described as having 16 steps. Off to the side is a curiosity. There is a shot of Hun-Gurrr with the Prime Armor attached to his arm, but for some reason his head is missing. It looks like it had been Photoshopped out by accident. What's funny is, this error appears twice on the box!
"Power of the Primes" figures all come with collector's cards. Each character has a card for each Prime Master. In my copy of Hun-Gurrr he included the "Micronus" card, giving him the ability to "Power-link" to share his ability to take food scraps and turn them into missiles. This is a fun pair of callbacks. Micronus is the Prime connected spiritually with the Mini-Cons - who "Power Linked" to larger Transformers to give them extra power and abilities. Meanwhile, Hun-Gurrr eating something and spitting it back as missiles is a callback to the G1 "Headmasters" mini-series where Hun-Gurrr did just that complete with "Ptoo" sound effect!
Hun-Gurrr's cosells are Alchemist Prime, Alpha Trion and Vector Prime.
Accessories:
Hun-Gurrr includes two Prime Armor accessories. These are a redeco of the sculpt from Inferno's release. The design is nice as it has two weapon barrels on the sides. This allows them to be used as shields or blasters and of course foundations for Prime Masters to attach to. These are cast in a lavender color with grey plastic used for the 5mm attachment port. These two pieces can be used as feet for Abominus.
The other accessory is the Terrorcon Enigma. Basically a way to use the "Prime Master" slot in the Prime Armor without having to include a transforming mini-figure. This is the same piece used with other figures in the series but this one is cast in the same lavender color as the Prime Armor with yellow painted in the middle.
Robot Mode:
Hun-Gurrr is an interesting figure. Technically, he shares core engineering with "Combiner Wars" Silverbolt. This is most notable in the way the torso and hip joints are designed and the design of the forearms which are bulky and have a piece that swings down and back out of the way. That said, Hun-Gurrr does not actually use any of Silverbolt's parts. From the head to the arms to the legs he uses entirely new sculpting. At first I thought maybe the forearms and thighs may have been the same as Silverbolt's, but they are not.
Unlike his G1 counterpart, Hun-Gurrr's design involves his beast mode tail forming the center of his torso section. However, the rest of the figure borrows its design elements right from the G1 version of the character. Key details include blocky shoulders with sections that are raised a bit, lining up with the sides of the head. There are raised sections on either side of the chest and his forearms are rather thick (a necesity since they are Combiner connection areas). One of G1 Hun-Gurrr's most distinctive design elements were his legs, which featured fins from the best mode on the lower legs and the beast mode heads as his feet. Both of these elements are found on this figure. Overall I appreciate the blend of new and old details coming together to form a new interpretation of G1 Hun-Gurrr.
Hun-Gurrr is made up of three main plastic colors. First are two shades of grey, one dark and one light that make upmost of the figure. Some smaller parts such as the head and "fins" from the beast mode are the same lavender color as the Prime Armor accessories. Lavender paint is used on details including the raised chest panels and the fins on his lower legs. The eyes are painted yellow, a homage to G1 Hun-Gurrr. Blue stickers from G1 Hun-Gurrr are replicated here via blue paint on the shoulders. In a fun callback to G1 Hun-Gurrr's stickers, there is a silver and purple Decepticon symbol sticker on the right shoulder. The left shoulder has a faux heat sensitive "rub symbol" that is really a silver sticker with a black outline and a Decepticon symbol inside of it. I love this clever callback to G1 Hun-Gurrr but of course I would have preferred an actual "rub sticker".
There are twenty three points of articulation on this figure. This includes four on each arm and six on each leg. Many of these joints are ratchet joints, intended to give the figure more stability in the Abominus mode. He also has ankle joints thanks to the ability of the beast mode heads to move from side to side. Due to the way the feet are designed, there have been reports of the feet not being tight enough to hold the figure up, causing him to flop forward or back. My copy of Hun-Gurrr does not have this issue but your mileage may vary.
Hun-Gurrr has 5mm ports in each fist. Each forearm has a 5mm peg on the sides, allowing you to attach his Prime Armor pieces. Sadly, he does not have a modern day version of the G1 blaster weapon.
Transformation to Beast Mode:
- Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the chest forward, push the head in and then swing it back into place.
- Swing the beast mode tail back.
- Swing the beast mode feet over the robot fists.
- Swing the robot arms back and bend the arms at the elbows to form the rear beast mode feet.
- On the back you'll see the beast mode's front legs. Swing those out and rotate them around.
- Bring the halves of the robot feet together to form the beast mode heads.
- Swing the robot legs up at the hips and bend them at the knee to for the beast mode neck/head sections.
- Push the fins up on the tail by pushing them up from the bottom.
- The Prime Armor pieces can be attached to the sides of the rear legs.
Beast Mode:
Hun-Gurrr's beast mode is perhaps one of the more unique ones in the Transformers universe. Sure there are plenty of lizard (or in this case "dragon") like beast modes, but not many of them have two heads! "Power of the Primes" Hun-Gurrr reflects a lot of the design elements of G1 Hun-Gurrr including the two heads with long necks, fins running down the back and two large legs in the back with smaller legs in the front. There are some modern design flourishes on this figure. Perhaps my favorite is the way the forward half of each "neck" is designed. They each have curved sections that come to points in the back. Overall this sculpt looks great.
All the colors from the robot mode carry over here. This time out we get a lot more of the lavender paint applications. The beast mode eyes are painted red. There are several silver, black and red stickers used for detailing on the sides of the "neck" sections and on top of the beast mode heads. The heavy color contrast between the light grey and the lavender paint (along with the stickers) work together to form a fantastic deco.
There are twenty two points of articulation in this mode. The "extra" articulation points mostly come from the beast mode necks and heads. One really nice touch is the ability for the heads to move side to side and up and down.
Hun-Gurrr has two pegs for Titan or Prime Masters in the middle of this form. As mentioned earlier, you can attach the Prime Armor to each of the rear legs. Attach Prime Masters and more weapons to that and you can really upgrade Hun-Gurrr's arsenal!
Transformation to Torso Mode (Starting in beast mode):
- Detach any accessories and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the beast mode heads and necks.
- Swing the rear beast mode legs/robot arms back. Straighten them out and swing the beast mode claws back.
- Swing the beast mode's front legs back.
- Swing each beast mode head into the neck.
- Rotate each neck out, then swing the front of the neck down. Use the two clips on it to connect to the corresponding slots on the torso.
- Pull up the middle panel on the back to reveal Abominus' head. Swing it up and over Hun-Gurrr's robot mode thighs.
- Swing the antennae on the head up.
- Swing the beast mode tail back.
- Swing the lavender panel up to form the chest armor.
- There are small tabs on the front beast mode feet. Be sure to connect those into the corresponding slots on the beast mode neck pieces.
Torso Mode:
In the G1 era, most combiner torsos had some very dramatic looking piece of armor on them. Most of the time, these armor pieces were actually accessories included with the leaders of each team. Sometimes these armor pieces could serve as shields for the robot mode. However, with this modern update of Hun-Gurrr the designers managed to make all the armor pieces part of the figure itself. It may sound strange, but one of my favorite aspects of this torso mode is transforming it into the torso. Instead of just kind of standing the figure up and slapping on a Combiner head piece, there are a lot of steps that go into this mode and forming the torso armor. The result is a very modern take on Abominus. He looks just like the G1 Combiner with a head featuring a crest, visor eyes and antennae on the sides while the chest is wide at the top and comes down to two points at the bottom. The portions of the beast mode necks that stick out to the sides not only act as connection points for other Terrorcons, but they also resemble the sides of G1 Abominus' torso armor in shape. This torso form looks awesome and I am very happy with it.
This mode mostly shows off grey parts, but the armor piece on the torso is lavender plastic running down the middle. Several stickers and paint applications come together to replicate stickers from G1 Abominus' torso armor. This includes the silver sections on the chest and the yellow and green portions towards the bottom of the armor.
Thanks to the multiple sections that tab together in this mode, the torso is very stable and does not come apart easily. All the connection points hold the limb pieces nice and tight. The hip joints are ratchet joints so they are quite stable on my copy of this figure. The thighs can swivel in and out and bend, adding some articulation to Abominus.
Final Thoughts:
Hun-Gurrr is a great update of the original figure. Even though it borrows engineering from Silverbolt, it is not just a quick retool/redeco. For the most part this is a brand new figure and it is fun and looks great. Recommended!
Pros:
- Sculpt pays homage to G1 Hun-Gurrr very well.
- The deco manages to use the base plastic colors, paint and stickers to form a nice, cohesive look.
- Good articulation.
Cons:
- The loose ankle joint/feet issue is a definite weakness.
- Does not include a new interpretation of G1 Hun-Gurrr's weapon.
