Background:
In 2021 Hasbro released Starscream has a Core Class figure. Fast forward to 2022 and now we have one of his fellow Seekers in Legacy: Skywarp! This figure is a redeco of Starscream with a different accessory. Check out my Starscream review to get my original thoughts on this sculpt. This review will focus on the changes made to the figure for this review.
Accessories:
Core Class Starscream came with his arm mounted Null Rays, but this figure lacks those weapons (the biggest strike against it, in my opinion). Instead, Skywarp includes the (I'm not kidding) "Energon Warp Fork". The device basically looks like a large claw or tuning fork and on its own it is not that impressive looking. I say "on its own" because this piece is really intended to combine with the accessories that came with Core Class Hot Rod and Iguanus to form a sword weapon.
The "Warp Fork" features a 3mm peg on the bottom and in between the prongs. It also has another peg on the side. This piece is black plastic with red on the prongs.
I really feel that the arm mounted weapons are iconic on G1 inspired Seekers. Not having them included really makes it feel like something is missing in this set, and that is really unfortunate.
Robot Mode:
Skywarp uses the same sculpt as Starscream with no changes. He even still includes the ports on the arms to attach the arm mounted weapons (if he had come with them). The entire figure is made of black plastic. Purple paint is used for his forearms and feet. Silver is found on his face and chest. The faux cockpit has orange paint on the windows. The eyes are painted red. Skywarp looks great. I love the way the purple blends with the black color and how the silver and orange pop.
The "Warp Fork" can be held in either hand as a claw weapon type thing. All the joints on my copy of Skywarp are just as tight as those on my copy of Starscream.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach the weapon and set it aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the arms and the torso panels out.
- The head is attached to a hinged section. Swing that down.
- Swing the jet cockpit/nosecone section up.
- Rotate the section with the wings and arms on it around.
- Swing the section with the nosecone and cockpit back.
- Rotate the robot head around, then swing the piece it is attached to up to tuck it under the cockpit section.
- Push the lower legs together, then connect it to the section with the wings.
- Swing the sections with the torso panels back together.
- Rotate the forearms around so you can connect the tabs on them to the slots on the underside of each wing.
- Swing the rear stabilizer fins on the ankles up, then swing out the horizontal stabilizer fins.
- Attach the Warp Fork to the underside of the nosecone.
Vehicle Mode:
Skywarp's vehicle mode is the same as Starscream's in sculpt, which makes sense since they were identical in G1. Like the robot mode, this form features mostly black plastic. The areas flanking the cockpit are painted silver. The cockpit windows are painted orange. While subtle, there are purple paint details on the wings, forming stripes and Decepticon symbols that add some nice visual texture to the vehicle.
As mentioned above, the "Warp Fork" attaches to the underside of the nosecone area. Honestly? It looks really goofy. It looks like G1 Megatron created some weird device he wanted Skywarp to carry to a battle site or something.
Final Thoughts:
I've had Skywarp for months and toyed with the figure on and off and the figure itself is great. I really love having solid, pocket sized figures. However, the whole sword gimmick thing spread across three figures just really did not do it for me. I would have much preferred to have Skywarp's original weapons. I do recommend this if you want to add to your Core Class Seeker army, but otherwise I'd say you can leave it.
Pros:
- Excellent Core Class sculpt.
- Good articulation.
- Classic Seeker design.
Cons:
- Some kibble in vehicle mode (but in my opinion that is to be expected).
- Goofy weapon and I really do miss the arm mounted cannons.
