Background:
In 2024, long time Hasbro rival Mattel made history with its first transforming Optimus Prime figure. As a follow up in 2025 Hasbro announced transforming Hot Wheels cars as part of the Collaborative line! The vehicle modes are meant to represent pre-existing original Hot Wheels designs transforming into new characters. In this case the vehicle being represented is Twin Mill, a Hot Wheels car first introduced in 1969.

Packaging:
I say without hyperbole that the Hot Wheels/Transformers Collaborative packaging is some of the best packaging Transformers has had in years. The figure is in vehicle mode on a bubble card, giving a retro feel to how the Deluxe Class was packaged in past toy lines like Universe and Armada. Just the format alone gives a strong nostalgia hit and I love it. The card art is dramatic, featuring both the Transformers and Hot Wheels logos and artwork of Twin Mill in both modes speeding out of what looks like a gateway (or maybe a Space Bridge?). The Mattel logo is off to the upper right whereas the Hasbro logo is on a cardboard insert inside the bubble. The figure itself is set at a slight angle inside the bubble.
The back of the card is also beautifully laid out. The top and bottom have black backgrounds while the center section has a grey, hex background. The Hot Wheels logo is on top and off to the side is the Collaborative logo for this release. Twin Mill is shown in both modes calling out a 21 step transformation. Interestingly, off to the side is a silhouette indicating the height of the figure (5 inches/12.7 centimeters). This is perhaps at attempt to demonstrate value and give anyone purchasing the figure an idea of its height in robot mode since audiences are mostly used to seeing figures in robot mode in box nowadays.
Accessories:
Twin Mill includes two engines/weapons. At first glance both pieces look like an engine with an exhaust pipe sticking out the side. However, play around with it and it turns out the engines are actually three separate pieces:
- Air Intake: The top part of the engine is an air intake (or vent, I could not find anything definitive on which it is meant to be). This piece is curved with a rectangular opening in front. Pull on this and the piece will come off. It features a 5mm peg at the bottom. This piece is silver plastic with no paint applications.
- Engine: The base of the engine looks like a custom car engine that sticks out on top. The sides feature a row of horizontal ridged lines and the top has some curved line details. These pieces features 5mm ports on top and sides to attach the other engine components. This piece is made of silver plastic with blue paint on one side to match up with Twin Mill himself.
- Exhaust Pipes: The exhaust pipes feature four vertical cylinders that lead to one large horizontal pipe. This is not documented but this piece can actually be disconnected, featuring 5mm pegs on the sides. These can be used as pistols by Twin Mill, but you'll likely have to take off the engine pieces so they hold in each fist securely. Each piece is painted silver.
The figure also includes two Blast Effects that are meant to represent flame shooting out of his exhaust pipes. Each one is a relatively thin cylinder shaped to look like flames. The flames curve slightly in the middle towards the back so they can go around the rear wheel well. These attach to the exhaust pipes and hold very securely.

Vehicle Mode:
Twin Mill is one of the first cars designed for the original Hot Wheels line, so this is a fun choice for a Transformers vehicle mode with some history behind it. The vehicle is roughly tear drop shaped with a curved front end that comes to a point in the middle and a round rear section. The rear wheels are larger than the front, giving it both a futuristic and retro look at the same time. The engines stick out in the middle of the vehicle and the cabin section is set towards the back. The headlights are set on top of the vehicle towards the front. These parts are translucent plastic and look great. The exhaust pipes sweeping back on the sides look great. Compared to the actual Hot Wheels vehicles the engine sections are much larger but overall the designers have managed to make a recognizable version of the Twin Mill vehicle.
In another throwback to another era of Transformers design, all four wheels are actually pinned in versus using mushroom pegs. I get the economic reasons for using mushroom pegs, but they always have potential to look somewhat "cheap" and not as solid as a pin. This also makes this vehicle more like its Hot Wheels namesake.
This figure is mostly made up of metallic blue, black and translucent blue plastic. The engine sections are made of silver plastic. There is a really beautiful deco pattern on this figure done in light blue and silver paint. These form a really nice pattern that starts on the hood and extends to the back of the vehicle. The rear section has red paint on the rear lights and a Hot Wheels logo in between them. The rear exhaust pipes are painted silver. Near each rear wheel well is a red Autobot symbol. This is a really beautiful and intricate paint scheme and I really appreciate the effort that clearly went into it.
Transformation to Robot Mode:
- Detach the accessories by sliding up the engines and set them aside for now.
- Swing the cabin cover up.
- Swing the top panels on the rear of the vehicle out to the sides.
- Swing the rear half of the vehicle down.
- Separate the two halves of the rear section to begin forming the legs.
- Swing the knee section against the panels that were on the underside of the vehicle's rear half.
- Swing the robot feet down, then point them forward and swing out the heel pieces.
- Separate the halves of the vehicle's front end and swing them out to the sides.
- Rotate the head around.
- Rotate the upper body around.
- Push the cabin section cover against the chest.
- Rotate the shoulders around.
- Swing the arms down and rotate them.
- The engine/weapons slide onto each forearm with the blue parts facing upward.

Robot Mode:
Twin Mill's robot mode design is a very traditional looking Transformers figure. The shoulders formed by the front of the vehicle is reminiscent of 'bots like Pointblank and Counterpunch. Also similar to those two having his cabin section form the torso is very traditional. In an interesting design choice, the head sculpt appears to be partly based on the Autobot symbol. Specifically the section on his brow has two angled patterns with two small angled lines inside. This looks like the top of the Autobot symbol. In a similar fashion, Bone Shaker's head sculpt has elements borrowed from the Decepticon symbol. This reinforces my theory that Twin Mill was designed as an Autobot and Bone Shaker was meant to be his Decepticon counterpart. In another fun detail, the head sculpt has small cylinders sticking out the back that resemble exhaust pipes like the ones he has in vehicle mode!
This mode mostly shows off blue plastic but now we get to see some more silver bits via his fists and elbows. Paint colors include silver, yellow and light blue. I was really impressed by the deco pattern on his legs and waist area which are a nice combination of light blue and silver. His eyes are painted yellow, which feels like a bit of a nod to older Transformers figures like G1 Sunstreaker and Optimus Prime. Overall the deco is beautiful.
There are twenty six points of articulation on this figure. This includes six in each arm and leg. The engine weapons can slide over his forearms. You can swap out the air intake and exhaust pipe sections for an alternate configuration or just have him hold the exhaust pipes as blasters.
Final Thoughts:
Twin Mill is a really fun Transformers figure and much like Bone Shaker it really serves as a nostalgia trip. Its packaging, design, construction and even deco all recall many older design principles we do not see as often as we should nowadays. Granted, you're paying significantly more for this figure than a typical Deluxe Class nowadays but if you can get this figure on sale it's more than worth it. Highly recommended!
Pros:
- Excellent sculpt in both modes.
- Represents the actual Hot Wheels Twin Mill car very well.
- Beautiful deco.
- Good articulation and fun accessories.
- Beautiful packaging.
Cons:
- I do wish Twin Mill could better hold his exhaust pipe "pistols" while wearing the engines over the forearms.
