Background:
The 2025 Generations line kicked off the Age of the Primes sub-line featuring some of the original Thirteen Primes in toy form. Unlike the previous Power of the Primes line, these figures would feature the Primes in forms inspired by previous portrayals of the characters either in animation or print. One of these Primes is Solus Prime. Solus was known as a creator of weapons for the Primes and in some continuities said weapons were used against their foe, Unicron. There have been several variations of Solus Prime over time (which you can read about on TFWiki) but in general she is portrayed as a good, compassionate Prime who was known for building weapons such as the Requiem Blaster.

Packaging:
Unlike the unique packaging design of Legacy, the Age of the Primes packaging is more aligned with the look of the Studio Series line. The boxes are now rectangular with a flap on top to hang on pegs. The background color is a flat black. The front features a new series of icons giving information about the figure. This is set to the left and is colored gold featuring a faction logo, calling out how many steps are in the transformation (28 in this case) and the age recommendation (8+ on this box). To the right is artwork featuring Solus Prime in both modes. In between is the figure with a window cut away with the return of a plastic window! These had been removed the last few years but Hasbro heard the fan outcry (and probably got sick of figures getting damaged in box by vandals) so they're back and I'm really glad about that. Below the artwork is the "Transformers" logo now set horizontally for the first time in about a decade. Under that is the "Age of the Primes" line looking a lot less stylized than the Legacy logos of years past. Under that is Solus' name and the Hasbro logo.

The back of the box features the figure in both modes calling out the 28 step transformation. It also has the Forge of Solus Prime in a small window. The bottom half features legal information in multiple languages and an "Authentic Transformers" logo. The box is definitely going for a premium appearance and it aligns the look more with Studio Series but it definitely does not feel as special or unique compared to previous years.

Accessories:
Solus Prime includes The Forge of Solus Prime hammer. This artifact is her signature weapon and tool. The Hammer is broken up into three pieces:

  • Handle Base: The bottom of the hammer features a purple piece with two small 5mm pegs on either side and a 5mm peg on top. This connects to the bottom of the hammer's handle. This piece is made of purple plastic with no paint applications.
  • Handle: The hammer handle is a cylinder with a 5mm port at the bottom and a 3mm peg on top. To have Solus hold the hammer you actually separate the hammer head from this handle, slide it into the fist then attach the hammer head on top. This piece is silver plastic with no paint applications.
  • Hammer Head: The hammer head features a taller section on one side and a more narrow one towards the back. There is a circle detail in the middle. The side features a 5mm peg that you can swing out to attach the weapon to the vehicle mode. This piece is purple with gold and yellow paint details. Perhaps the most significant is Solus Prime's symbol printed on top of the hammer head.

Robot Mode

Robot Mode:
Solus Prime has had various designs over the years. For this release the designers decided to use the Power of the Primes design for this figure. Her overall appearance is very different than your standard Transformers figure. Her head sculpt has an ornate helmet with thin panels on the sides connected to a circle (evoking the classic Optimus Prime design) and parts that stick up resembling a crown over her forehead. She has shoulder armor that extends out to the sides and she has a panel that extends down from the waist and partly covers her legs. This piece looks like it could be part of medieval armor or maybe even a robe or ceremonial dress. Her legs features layers of ornate detail including feet that have "toe" sections that come up to a vertical point. There are also lots of tiny details including layers of armor on her forearms and circles that look almost like screws on her shoulder armor. Overall, Solus looks fantastic.

This figure is mostly made of purple and silver plastic. Paint colors include gold, silver, yellow and light blue. The gold and silver is mostly used to paint raised detailing on the head, shoulder armor and lower body. Her eyes are painted light blue. The gold and silver against the purple really looks beautiful offering some really nice contrast.

There are twenty four points of articulation on this figure including five in each arm and six in each leg. You can move the shoulder armor a bit but I'm not counting that. My copy of this figure does have one irritating flaw: the right foot keeps coming off. It is held in using a mushroom peg but if I manipulate that ankle/foot it tends to just pop out. Oddly, I have no such issue with the left foot/ankle piece. There are seven 5mm ports in this mode. One under each foot, another on each forearm, the fists and one on the back which you can use for weapons storage.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the weapon and set it aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Swing the back panel back.
  4. Swing the front grille of the vehicle mode up.
  5. Swing the head back.
  6. Swing up the waist armor and swing the side panels up, then rotate the middle panel to the side. Swing it up, then turn it back around so it is now sitting on top of the side panels.
  7. Rotate the lower body around.
  8. On each foot, swing the wheel out to the side, then point the feet down. Then swing the wheel back into place, then rotate the leg so the wheels point outward.
  9. Swing the feet and lower legs up and push it against the back of the thighs.
  10. Push the lower legs together.
  11. One each shoulder armor piece, swing the front panel up.
  12. On each forearm, swing the inner panel out, then swing the robot fists in.
  13. Swing each arm forward at the shoulder joint.
  14. Swing the shoulder armor pieces back, and connect the forearm panel pieces to the sides to form the doors.
  15. The weapon can be stored on top of the vehicle.

I do not often comment on transformations at this part of the review but in this case I have to. For half of the experience, this transformation is fine. The legs come together just fine to form the rear of the vehicle. However, the front portion of the vehicle is maddening. The problem is twofold: the way panels are attached to the figure and having little to no wiggle room in the transformation of the arms. During the transformation of the arms and the front end of the vehicle the shoulder panels popped off multiple times and the door panels on the forearms went flying several times as I moved the arms. The front grille piece even popped off a couple times. It took about six attempts for me to finish the transformation. Some of this would be mitigated by giving more clearance for the shoulder panel, which gets sandwiched in between the forearm and the vehicle body. The other thing that would help is if the forearm panels were pinned in instead of relying on pressure to keep the panel in place.

Vehicle Mode

Vehicle Mode:
Solus Prime's vehicle mode is a Cybertronian car. To me, the design echoes some of Springer's car mode including a blocky central section in front flanked by two sections that protrude out in front on the sides. The back looks like some of the mechanical bits that power the vehicle are exposed in the back. The vehicle has an interesting design sensibility as it looks powerful, almost like a pickup truck in the front while the rear section looks more sleek and streamlined. Overall this is a cool and unusual looking vehicle.

This mode mostly shows off purple and black plastic. Paint colors are mostly gold and silver. The gold contrasts beautifully against the purple plastic and I like how the silver looks on the back and wheels.

This vehicle has three 5mm ports. On eon each side and one on top. You can attach the hammer to the top and point the handle forward as a cannon or just use it for weapon storage. If you prefer the hammer on the side of the vehicle, use the tab on the side of the hammer head and attach it to the lower leg on the left side.

Final Thoughts:
If you are a big fan of Transformers lore having Solus Prime in your collection is a treat. She has made multiple media appearances at this point and the figure looks great in robot mode. The transformation however is an absolute mess. Parts should not be flying off into the corners of a room during transformation, but that happens every single time I change this figure into vehicle mode. If you're cool with a particularly annoying transformation or you just want Solus to be one of the Thirteen on your shelf, then this figure is fine. I plan on keeping her in robot mode in my display anyhow. Mildly recommended for hardcore fans of the Thirteen and completists, but that's about it.

Pros:

  • Excellent robot mode sculpt.
  • Cool "legendary" weapon.
  • Beautiful colors.
  • Good articulation.

Cons:

  • The foot popping off constantly in robot mode is annoying.
  • I've gone on and on about the transformation so I'll spare you, but that is the main con of this figure and it's a significant one.
