Background:
In 2020 Hasbro released a new version of G1 Wheeljack as Earthrise Wheeljack. This version of the character took heavy design cues from the animated version with a deco that leaned more towards the original G1 toy.

In 2025, Hasbro decided to redeco Wheeljack and release it as "Gamer Edition" Wheeljack based on his appearance in the "Devastation" video game. This is a follow up to the Troop Builder Two Pack released in August of the same year. It is important to note that this is not a re-release of the Wheeljack that was included with the Legacy United Autobot 5-Pack. That figure was more "cartoon" based versus this one which uses the "Devastation" game as its main point of reference.

Packaging:
In 2025 Hasbro decided to unify the look of the packaging for the Transformers Generations lines. Studio Series boxes largely carry over the same design with rectangular boxes, though this year they feature plastic windows again! Like previous years the primary color of the boxes are black with the Studio Series logo represented by blue line with black lettering. However, the vertical Transformers logo has been reset to its original horizontal position, now placed under the figure. The media the character comes from ("Devastation") is on the lower left hand side and its name is next to it. The character art (in both modes) is where the vertical "Transformers" logo used to be. True to the style of Target exclusives recently, the artwork is in muted, red, grey and black colors. On the other side are a series of symbols including an Autobot symbol, a callout for the 18 step transformation and "8+" for the recommended age. The figure is now almost in full view from head to toe since it is protected by a plastic window.

The back of the box features a section on top showing the symbol featuring a screenshot from the "Devastation" game . It also features his name and a blurb in multiple languages that says "WHEELJACK bravely fights to defeat the INSECTICON guards of the Plasma Core". Below that the figure is shown in both modes calling out an 18 step transformation. For Studio Series these changes are relatively minor and the packaging still looks great and I'm happy the plastic windows are back. It never looked right to me to have over half the figure obscured in packaging. This allows the figure to be mostly shown off in box.

Accessories:
Wheeljack includes two weapons:

  • Magnetic Inducer Launcher: This is the same weapon that has been included with this mold since Earthrise. It is based on the rocket launcher included with G1 Wheeljack. This time out this piece is made of white plastic with silver paint on all the parts except the pegs. The weapon has one 5mm peg on the side, a tab on the bottom and a 5mm port on the back.

  • Blaster: The "Basic Blaster" is a newly tooled weapon. If you look at it and think "That looks a lot like Jazz's weapon" you would be right. In "Devastation" the Basic Blaster was modeled after Jazz's rifle. That said, it is not a reuse of the weapon from Studio Series 86 Jazz. Instead it is larger than that weapon and features different proportions. This piece is made of silver plastic with no paint applications. It features a 5mm port on the bottom and the barrel end can fit a Blast Effect.

"Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
Wheeljack uses the same sculpt as Earthrise Wheeljack with no modifications that I can see. What's cool about this is that the figure winds up benefitting from having all the extra play features of that time period. He has three small pegs to attach Blast Effects as if he is being hit by firepower. You'll find these on his left shoulder, right forearm and left leg. He also has nine 5mm ports not including his fists! Back during the War for Cybertron series this was common to allow figures to attach parts from figures like Weaponizers and Battle Masters to arm up each figure. On top of all that Wheeljack has an impressive twenty six points of articulation and all the joints are still solid. No loose or floppy joints here.

It's been a while since "Devastation" was out so you can check out this video on Youtube by @ShortsFormersX to get a good look at the game model. While the pattern is very G1 in spirit, it is distinctive. This figure uses a much brighter white plastic than the Earthrise version and the grey plastic is lighter as well. The paint deco uses the stripe pattern from the game including dual red stripes on the chest and green and red stripes on the legs. The head features distinct light grey deco and the eyes are a light blue. A bit of silver is used on the "wings" on his back. His chest window features a large amount of light blue paint with white "streaks" that look like reflections, a feature used in the "Devastation" game. Finally the feet have an angled grey line in the middle that also appeared in the game. Overall this deco looks great and it really does feel like a cartoon or game model come to life.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Rotate the "wings" together to form the spoiler.
  4. Swing the chest panel down.
  5. Push the head down into the chest.
  6. Swing the arms up to the sides.
  7. Rotate the lower body around.
  8. Point each foot down, then swing it inward.
  9. Swing each leg out to the sides.
  10. Swing up the curved, blue pieces.
  11. Swing the lower legs up over the thighs.
  12. Swing the arms back, pushing the shoulders together to form the rear of the car.
  13. Rotate the forearms up, then swing them forward to complete the sides of the vehicle.
  14. The weapons can be attached to the top or back of the car.

"Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
While there have been no tooling changes made to this figure, I did find a small issue with the spoiler. The spoiler is formed by the "wings" from the back of the robot mode. On my copy of Earthrise Wheeljack, the two wings come together nicely to form the spoiler. On my copy of this figure however I think something in the mold did not come out right. The middle part of each spoiler half does not quite line up with the other, causing the spoiler to look a bit crooked. You can try to line them up, but it feels almost like there is a bit too much plastic in the middle, so the two halves push against each other causing the misalignment. From a distance you probably won't even notice this, but when you transform the figure and look at it close up it becomes obvious.

This mode mostly shows off white plastic and white paint. The blue window pieces all come together to form a blue windshield that wraps around to the sides. The stripes from the chest are on top of the vehicle and the ones from the legs wind up on the front half of the vehicle, mostly showing off green with smaller red lines in the middle. The sides of the wheels are painted silver. Once again he looks very cartoon-like thanks to the bright colors and light shade of blue on the windows.

The 5mm port on the top of the vehicle still holds the weapons in place nice and tight. Unfortunately the two weapons do not combine in a meaningful way so you're left attaching one to the back for storage and the other on top as an offensive weapon.

Final Thoughts:
Aside from the odd spoiler issue in vehicle mode, this is a really nice redeco of Wheeljack. I appreciate that it tries to match up with the game model and isn't just a reissue of the one from the 5-Pack. I'm not sure if the spoiler issue is a widespread one or not, but it isn't ideal. That said, this is still a good sculpt overall and I appreciate the addition of the "Basic Blaster". Recommended if you missed out on previous Wheeljack figures and want to get one at retail price. If you already own the others, you may want to skip this unless you're a completist or huge "Devastation" fan.

Pros:

  • Excellent deco based on the "Devastation" game.
  • The addition of the "Basic Blaster" is welcome.
  • Carries over play features of the War for Cybertron era.

Cons:

  • The spoiler issue is a strange one.
