Background:
Micronus Prime is one of the original Thirteen created by Primus. In terms of lineage, Micronus is meant to be the origin point of smaller Transformers such as Mini-Cons. The character has appeared in various pieces of Transformers fiction including the 2015 Robots in Disguise cartoon. Technically speaking there has been a Generations Micronus Prime before as a Prime Master in the Power of the Primes line. This version however uses the Robots in Disguise series from 2015 as its inspiration.

Packaging:
Unlike the unique packaging design of Legacy, the Age of the Primes packaging is more aligned with the look of the Studio Series line. The boxes are now rectangular with a flap on top to hang on pegs. The background color is a flat black. The front features a new series of icons giving information about the figure. This is set to the left and is colored gold featuring a faction logo, calling out how many steps are in the transformation (22 in this case) and the age recommendation (8+ on this box). To the right is artwork featuring Micronus jumping out of his armor. Beneath him is artwork of him riding the armor in vehicle mode. In between is the figure with a window cut away with the return of a plastic window! These had been removed the last few years but Hasbro heard the fan outcry (and probably got sick of figures getting damaged in box by vandals) so they're back and I'm really glad about that. Below the artwork is the "Transformers" logo now set horizontally for the first time in about a decade. Under that is the "Age of the Primes" line looking a lot less stylized than the Legacy logos of years past. The bottom features his name and above that "The Thirteen" along with his personal symbol to the left.

The back of the box features the figure in both modes calling out the 22 step transformation. The bottom half features legal information in multiple languages and an "Authentic Transformers" logo. The box is definitely going for a premium appearance and it aligns the look more with Studio Series but it definitely does not feel as special or unique compared to previous years.

Accessories:
Micronus Prime is a rather unconventional Deluxe Class figure. Instead of just one standalone figure that transforms, he comes with a suit of armor based on the "Apex Armor" seen in Transformers Prime and the "Chimera Stone", an artifact that allows him to focus his powerful energy.

"Mech Suit"

Mech Suit
The Mech Suit included with this set is inspired by the "Apex Armor" seen in Transformers Prime but it is not a one to one recreation of it. That armor had a very curved and humanoid appearance to it, like something you'd see a comic book character wearing. This one is a bit more robotic looking with more hard angles on the arms and sharply defined lines on the torso. It also had a separate head whereas the Apex Armor would allow the wearer's head to peek out. This armor also has very thick "boot" like legs. The one design element that carries over from the cartoon is the center of the torso where the Chimera Stone attaches. In the show, the armor starts as a disc and forms the armor around its wearer. On the figure itself there is a circle in the middle that resembles the design of the Apex Armor's "disc" from the show. You can also attach the Chimera Stone to create the same effect. One of my favorite design elements are his fingers which resemble barrels of a blaster!

The Mech Suit is made up of black and three shades of turquois plastic ranging from dark to light shades. Silver paint is used for detailing on the shoulders, head and waist area. I believe the colors are meant to evoke the Apex Armor colors from the Transformers Prime cartoon and to that end they do a good job, but I would have liked to see some metallic blue being used on edges to give the "glowing" effect the armor had in the cartoon. While the upper body looks good, the legs are just black plastic with no deco and unfortunately it winds up looking very plain.

The primary functionality of this suit is acting as armor for Micronus Prime. When he is in his alt-mode, he fits inside the torso, which splits down the middle and opens up on hinges to the side like two doors. There are twenty three points of articulation on the Mech Suit including five in each arm and six in each leg. Micronus' arms and lower body can be detached and used as "Weaponizer"-like accessories. The 5mm pegs on the arms can be used to attach them to other figures. The lower body can form a wheel which you can also imagine as a shield. Including the fists, the Mech Suit has eight 5mm ports to attach accessories. I will say I truly appreciate the designers continuing to provide 5mm ports on places like the arms and the bottom of the feet, a design touch going back to Siege.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Open up the torso and remove Micronus Prime if he is inside. Leave the panels open.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Detach the arms and set them aside.
  4. Detach the lower half of the body.
  5. Swing both legs up. The tabs on the center waist piece should point up.
  6. Rotate each lower leg so the feet point out to the sides.
  7. Swing the feet down.
  8. Swing each lower leg up over the thighs and push them together to form a wheel.
  9. Moving on to the upper body, push the head down into the chest.
  10. Swing up the lower half of each torso panel.
  11. On the back, swing up the panel with the two halves of the "front fork" of the vehicle mode.
  12. Bring the two arms of the front fork together, then swing the seat down.
  13. Attach the wheel to the two arms.
  14. Swing down the torso panels and connect them to the tabs on either side of the wheel.
  15. Straighten out each arm and attach it to the ports on the sides with the exhaust pipes pointed back.

"Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
The Mech Suit's Unicycle mode is a really unique vehicle. The front features an oval shaped windshield section, it rests on a giant wheel and the exhaust pipes are formed from the blaster/fingers of the Mech Suit. Above the windshield are handlebars. This is a really fun little vehicle and aesthetically it looks quite different than your typical Transformers figure nowadays so I give it high marks for that.

The darker turquois colors shine here in the front, seat and sides of the vehicle. The arms give a lighter color contrast. Metallic blue is used for the windshield. I would have liked a few more deco points say, on the sides but I'm sure those were not done due to budget limitations.

The wheel on this vehicle rolls very nicely, but even though it is rather wide the vehicle cannot stand on its own. You can bend one of the arms to prop it up on one side but that's about it. There is a peg on the back of the seat and multiple 5mm ports are available (mostly thanks to the arms) to attach accessories.

Chimera Stone
The Chimera Stone is a small, plastic disc with raised line patterns that look almost like fan blades or spokes on a wheel. The look of this artifact is inspired by the core of the Apex Armor in Transformers: Prime where a circular device would seemingly generate the armor. This piece is made of translucent blue plastic. If you look very closely you'll see silver and black details in the center. The silver is the background while the black is the Micronus symbol. The symbol is super tiny and I'm impressed at how good it looks! This piece has a 5mm port in the back, allowing you to attach it to the armor.

Micronus Prime

"Chimera Stone" Mode:
In what most likely is an error, Micronus Prime's product copy describes his alt-mode as the Chimera Stone, but that does not make a lot of sense given he comes with The Chimera Stone. I did not really have another name for this mode so I just stuck with it in quotes. Really, I think this mode looks more like the Mini-Con "disc" forms of the Robots in Disguise Mini-Cons from 2015. This makes sense as Micronus Prime made his primary animated debut in that series.

"Micronus Prime" alt mode

Micronus is made up of the same turquois color as the Mech Armor and translucent blue plastic. He has an elaborate metallic blue paint pattern on him that forms the Mini-Con "M" symbol. Some silver peeks out as well. The metallic paint and translucent plastic together create a beautiful visual effect. I love how it looks.

Transformation to Robot Mode:

  1. Swing the lower halves of the disc out and down.
  2. Swing the upper parts out to form the arms and pull them up.
  3. Turn the legs so the feet point forward
  4. Swing the arms down.
  5. Turn the head around.

"Micronus Prime"

Robot Mode:
Micronus Prime's robot mode is based on his appearance in the Robots in Diguise cartoon. Some of the key details carried over from the show include:

  • Head: The design of Micronus' head is very much the style of the animated series. He has a crest and brow that looks like he has huge eyebrows. He also has a large chin with a "chin guard" piece and narrow cheeks. This is how he appeared in the series as well.
  • Torso: The torso has several angled lines that look like armor layers and there is a circle in the middle (which visually calls to the Chimera Stone). While the design of these armor panels isn't one to one with the cartoon, they are clearly inspired by them.
  • Back: On the back is a panel with two points sticking up. This was a feature on the animation model.
  • Arms: The shoulders feature angled sections on the sides and the forearms have curved armor. This is how his arms appeared in the cartoon as well.

Color-wise all the colors from the alt-mode carr over here, with a lot of translucent blue money showing. Metallic blue and silver paint are used for the head, torso, legs and arms. Overall Micronus looks really cool and I'm glad they based his appearance on his Robots in Disguise model.

There are nine points of articulation on this figure. This includes two in each arm and two in each leg. The joints are mostly ball joints so that gives you a good range of motion. His fists are huge relative to the figure so he can hold accessories with 5mm pegs. This creates this double visual effect because he's so tiny, his big fists hint at the dramatic amount of power he wields as a Prime.

To have him ride the Unicycle, turn his forearms so you can fit the handlebars in his fists. There are small tabs on the insides of his lower legs that fit into the slots right above where the arms are attached to the Unicycle. It's a fun play pattern and yes, I will admit, this little robot riding on a Unicycle looks almost comical, but it is somehow fun and cool at the same time.

Final Thoughts:
Micronus Prime is a really fun set. I like the idea of having "armor" for the smallest Prime, but it also has a bit of a Pretender vibe to it at the same time. The callback to Robots in Disguise is also most welcome and we also get one of the more unique vehicle modes in recent years. Some fans may find this figure a bit odd, but I personally think it is recommended!

Pros:

  • The Mech Armor is fun, bringing back the "Weaponizer" play pattern along with a unique vehicle.
  • Micronus being based off his Robots in Disguise incarnation is most welcome.
  • Really nice colors and deco on Micronus Prime himself.
  • I like the addition of the Chimera Stone artifact.

Cons:

  • For what you get, some fans may not like the price point but I think it works. If anything, try to wait for a sale.
