Packaging:
In 2025 Hasbro decided to unite the appearance of the Generations and Studio Series figures. This new look is largely based on the appearance of the Studio Series packaging. The boxes are rectangular with a black background. The front features a series of icons acting as shorthand to give information about the figure. Oddly no matter the faction, it always features an Autobot symbol and the "More than Meets the eye" line above it. Then icons show the robot to vehicle mode and the number of steps. In this case it is 17 steps and the vehicle mode icon is an actual construction vehicle. Under that is the age recommendation of 8+. In the middle is Scrapper behind a plastic window (they're back!). To the right is Scrapper's artwork featuring part of the robot mode and part of the vehicle mode. Below that is the now horizontal "Transformers" logo with the "Studio Series" logo under it. Below that is the "Transformers: The Movie" logo next to his name. The left side of the box features part of the artwork for Devastator.
The back of the box has a red section on top featuring the movie logo, Scrapper's name and a screenshot from the film showing Devastator fighting the Dinobots. To the right is a blurb in several languages saying Scrapper is the engineer and designer for the Constructicons. He ocmbines with other Constructicons to form Devastator". Below that is Scrapper in both modes with a callout for the 17 step transformation. He is described as "1 of 5" and the blurb next to it says "Collect to Combine". This seems to be an error since there are six Constructicons, but keep in mind two of the Constructicons come in a Commander Class priced two pack, so in fact you do only have to collect five releases to form Devastator.
Accessories:
Scrapper includes three accessories:
- Blaster: Scrapper's blaster is based on the weapon included with the G1 action figure. It features a raised vertical section in the back with a circle in the middle and a barrel in the front and a smaller piece under the base of the barrel. This piece is made of black plastic with no paint applications. The weapon features a 5mm peg at the bottom, a connection tab on the right side and a port on either side in the middle. The purple of these tiny ports is unknown at this time but I'm going to guess it's to connect to other weapons or to connect to other Constructicon figures for storage.
- Devastator Rifle: Also included with Scrapper is Devastator's rifle. The rifle splits into two weapons. The design uses a lot of the same details as the G1 version. This includes a cone shaped cylinder at the back along with various vertical sections sticking up in the middle and towards the front end. Each half of the weapon features a 5mm peg on the bottom. The rear half of the weapon features a tab on the bottom to attach to Scrapper for storage. On the right side is a 5mm port. The front half has a slot on the side you can also use for storage. The front half has a barrel end that can fit a Blast Effect. These pieces are purple plastic with no paint applications.
Robot Mode:
This figure is all new. It is not a retool/redeco of the previous Combiner Wars figure. That means the designers were able to start from scratch to create this figure. Being a part of Studio Series 86, this figure uses the G1 cartoon model as its foundation. However, those who are familiar with the original cartoon know that the animation models were all streamlined and simplified to allow for animation (which, back in the day was all done by hand). This means the designers had to balance out a figure that looked like the cartoon model while adding in details that fans have come to expect from modern day Transformers figures.
The base design has many of Scrapper's classic features. This includes a very boxy looking body with wheels on both the shoulders and the legs. His shovel is set against his back and his head has a flat panel on top (that always looked like a little hat to me). One of the most distinct sections taken from the original toy and cartoon is the torso which features several vertical, rectangular sections that stick out with various shapes on them including thin rectangles and circles. His head has Scrapper's classic look including visor eyes and a mouth plate. In a fun touch (which maybe suggests a future redeco) the chest and waist sections have several details sculpted into them that mirror sticker details from the original figure (some of which also carried over to the animation model).
On top of the cartoon inspired details above, additional details have been added in, some of which are based on the original G1 toy. Two of my favorites are on the forearms and lower legs. On the forearms, you'll notice line details going across on top, creating small ridges. This is a detail from the G1 figure that was not carried over to the animation model. On the legs you will see two circles. You will notice they do not mirror each other. Instead, the right leg's circle is lower while the other is higher. These are callbacks to small pegs on the G1 Scrapper toy that did carry over to the animation model. However, on the animation model the pegs are at the same level near the knees. Having them uneven here is a clear callback to the G1 toy.
Scrapper is made up of a neon green, purple and black plastic. These are classic Constructicon colors but interestingly the neon green color does not exactly match either the recent Devastator reissue from Walmart or the Combiner Wars version of the figure. I'm not particularly concerned about it however. The color has the brightness to it that evokes the classic Constructicon colors so it works for me. Paint colors include silver, black and red - also the colors seen on the character on both the original toy and the cartoon. A Decepticon symbol is tampographed in the middle of his chest. Sure there are some unpainted sculpted details, especially on the legs, but this matches up well with the animation model so I have no issue with that.
There are twenty four points of articulation on this figure. This includes five in each arm and six in each leg. I am being generous and counting the ability of the wrists to swing inward as part of the transformation. There is no waist articulation however, and I believe this is due to Scrapper forming one of Devastator's legs and needing a certain level of stability to hold up the top half of the Combiner. Scrapper has two 5mm ports, each in his hands. There are also ports under his feet.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Swing the chest panel forward.
- Push the head down into the chest, then swing the panel back into place.
- Swing the fists into the forearms.
- Swing the robot feet and the front panels on the lower legs up.
- Push the lower legs together.
- Swing the other panels that formed the lower legs up. There are small tabs on he canopy/driver section that fit into corresponding grooves on the legs.
- Swing the forearms back so they are at a right angle with the biceps.
- Push the tabs on the arms into the corresponding grooves on the sides of the figure.
- Extend the shovel forward.
- The weapons can be attached to the rectangular slots or tabs on the back of the vehicle.
Vehicle Mode:
Scrapper's vehicle mode is an interpretation of a Caterpillar CAT 966C wheel loader. Like the real life vehicle it features a boxy body with four large wheels, a driver's section in the middle on top and a large shovel in front. This mode also features ladders on either side in the middle. This mode is much chunkier than the G1 version and it features a lot of sculpted details that are unique to this figure but overall you can still tell it is meant to be Scrapper.
The neon green and purple plastic colors carry over to this mode. The driver's section windows are painted purple, but that's about it in terms of painted details in this mode. I would have liked some more details painted such as the ladders on the sides but color-wise the Constructicons were pretty plain in the cartoon so this serves its intended purpose.
Scrapper can roll on all four wheels. The shovel can lift up on two arms, each of which has two hinges allowing for extra articulation. The weapons can attach to the back. I wound up attaching the smaller blaster to the back of Devastator's rifle. That said, there is a small peg on the side of the shove that you can also attach the blaster to. I was surprised that Scrapper did not include the chest armor for Devastator which was the piece included with G1 Scrapper. I hope that Devastator's chest piece will be able to attach to Scrapper in this mode once it's released.
Final Thoughts:
Scrapper is not the most complex Transformers figure you'll ever encounter, but he doesn't need to be. He has a very G1 styled robot mode and vehicle mode and he has to be a steady, strong limb to hold up Devastator. Time will tell about that last part, but as a robot/vehicle he's a fun update of the original. Some fans will balk at the Voyager Class cost for what is, essentially a Deluxe Class figure with a limb mode but given some of his bulk and the extra ankle tilt built into his limb mode I can see where some of the engineering dollars went. I also tend to think of the new Constructicons more as a set than individual figures when it comes to cost, but again, if you have reservations about the price I totally understand. I would recommend monitoring sites for sales or discounts via coupons etc. if you don't want to pay full price. In my book however this guy is recommended!
Pros:
- Excellent sculpt that pays provides a cool update of G1 Scrapper.
- Good deco.
- Transformation is simple but fun.
- I am glad he has his own blaster on top of Devastator's rifle.
- Good articulation.
Cons:
- This figure isn't quite a Voyager in my book. It hovers somewhere between a Deluxe and a Voyager, so the price point will put off some fans.
- I do wish there was waist articulation but I suspect this would have messed with the ankle tilt or stability for Devastator.
