Background:
Megatronus was first introduced as "The Fallen" in the 2003 "War Within: The Dark Ages" comic books by Dreamwave. Writer Simon Furman would go on to establish him as one of the original "Thirteen Transformers" created by Primus to battle Unicron. He would go on to betray his fellow Primes and side with Unicron, hence his name "The Fallen". The 2010 novel "Exodus" introduced his original name of Megatronus and over the years various stories have featured the character taking dark turns in Cybertronian history. In last year's "Transformers One" feature film Megatronus did not take a villainous turn, but his legacy did become one of betrayal and destruction through D-16/Megatron.

Before Transformers One mass audiences were introduced to a version of The Fallen in the "Revenge of the Fallen" theatrical film. That version looked quite different than others, but it is the version that has received the most action figures over the years including a 2025 Studio Series 3-Pack of Decepticons. However, this particular version of Megatronus is more based on his "War Within" appearance which did receive the action figure treatment as a Titanium figure in 2007. This is the first time since then we have seen this design in toy form.

And lest you think I'm forgetting about other versions of the character, there have been a few including one that was the main villain of part of the 2015 Robots in Disguise series and the more recent release in Power of the Primes.

Packaging:
Age of the Primes represents a dramatic shift in Generations packaging. Unlike previous years of the War for Cybertron trilogy or Legacy which went in dramatic directions with packaging shape and artwork, the designers have dialed back the look of the boxes a lot. The Age of the Primes packaging winds up looking a lot more like Studio Series packaging. The boxes are now rectangular. No weird angles or anything. The background is just plain black. The "Transformers" logo is no longer vertical (dropping a trend that began over ten years ago) and is now horizontal in the front of the packaging with the "Age of the Primes" name underneath it. Character art is featured to the right, but it's only partial art showing a bit of the character in robot mode with focus on the vehicle mode underneath. To the left are icons describing how many steps the character takes to convert from one mode to the other (38 in this case) and the age recommendation (8+ in this case).

Megatronus is inside the box attached to a cardboard tray. You can see the entire figure in robot mode thanks to the return of plastic windows! Fans will recall that for the last few years Transformers toys have had no plastic windows in an effort to (ostensibly) make more eco-friendly packaging. However, this led to damaged toys with heads being yanked off and sometimes figures being outright stolen. For many fans, the return of the plastic windows is a welcome one.

The back of the box shows the character in both modes calling out a 38 step transformation. Behind the character is a sky background with a wheel showing some of the Thirteen Prime symbols. Off to the side in a small window Megatronus is shown aiming the Requiem Blaster Cannon attached to his arm. Towards the bottom is the Requiem Blaster with the name of the weapon printed in Cybertronian letters.

I think the designers were going for a more "adult" and "premium" appearance to the packaging and to that end it works. It looks like something you'd see in a museum shop, but I do feel some of the fun and whimsy of the dramatic Legacy artwork and visual bombast has been lost and I'm a tad sad about that.

Accessories:
Megatronus includes a pile of accessories. Seriously, there's a lot going on here compared to some other Leader Class figures so let's go through them.

Requiem Blaster
The Requiem Blaster was originally introduced in the Armada series as a weapon formed by the Space Mini-Con Team. It was considered one of the most powerful weapons in existence. The name "Requiem Blaster" would later go on to be used for Megatronus' weapon which would be visually analogous to G1 Megatron's Fusion Cannon. In some illustrations it wound up being mounted on his arm. This particular accessory however uses the animation model of the weapon as it appeared in "Power of the Primes". Like that weapon it has a roughly rectangular shape with some angles and bits sticking up on top. The sides have a series of vertical lines running along the middle and there are circular details on the side.

This weapon is made of purple plastic. The line detail in the middle of each side is painted orange, a visual callback to the flames that are part of the character's design. The front barrel is painted gunmetal grey.

The Requiem Blaster features three 5mm pegs, one on the bottom and two on the sides. The end of the barrel has a 5mm port, allowing you to attach Blast Effects or other accessories with 5mm pegs.

Gun Barrel/Cannon
There has been much speculation online at the time of this figure's release that it is a "pretool" for an eventual Studio Series 86 Megatron figure. This particular accessory seems to lend credence to that idea. This accessory appears to be a gun barrel. Similar to G1 Megatron's design, this barrel has a cylinder with a thicker section in front with a tab sticking up at the top acting as a sight. For a character with a very Cybertronian design, this particular accessory has a very "Earth-based" appearance. Now, there are leaked photos floating around online of Studio Series 86 Megatron as I type this review and his gun barrel piece does not look exactly like this one, but they do share some similarities so insert the gif of Batman rubbing his chin here.

This piece is made of black plastic with no paint applications. It features one 5mm peg which can be swung down or back. You can attach it to the various 5mm ports on Megatronus and if you swing the peg up it can be connected to the Requiem Blaster. The other end features a port that can fit Blast Effects.

Spark Fuser
The Spark Fuser weapon was introduced as a device used by Megatronus in 2015's Robots in Disguse series. The weapon is a staff with a double blade at the end. In my eyes, the way the blades angle seem to obliquely reference the Decepticon symbol. This weapon is actually two pieces. The staff is solid plastic while the blade section is made of soft plastic for safety reasons. The staff is purple plastic while the blade section is painted silver and metallic purple. This weapon features a 5mm handle at one end and two 5mm pegs slightly above that.

Blade Weapon
The blade weapon included with Megatronus looks like a machete featuring large blade that is angled at the end. The entire piece is made of hard plastic, even the blade which surprised me. The blade is even sculpted to look sharp, but don't worry it's not. This piece is made of black plastic with the blade painted silver. The handle is 5mm while the hilt has a 5mm peg on either side. The handle of this weapon can connect to the staff section of the Spark Fuser weapon to form a longer staff weapon.

Missile Pod
When Megatronus was introduced in the Dreamwave comics, one distinctive detail was a missile pod on top of one shoulder. This piece is a rectangular box with five "missiles" or "rockets" sticking out in the front. It features a 5mm port on the bottom. This piece is made of gunmetal grey plastic with the tips of the missiles/rockets painted silver.

Blast Effects
When the Dreamwave version of The Fallen was introduced, one of the distinct visual features of the character were flames emanating from his body. He basically looked like a walking furnace. To simulate that appearance, Megatronus includes four flame shaped Blast Effects. Two large ones are intended to attach to the 5mm ports on his shoulders. Two smaller ones look like small flames with 5mm pegs at the bottom. The shoulder Blast Effects are clear orange plastic while the smaller ones feature both yellow and orange clear plastic. These Blast Effects are beautiful and very different than your typical "weapons fire" Blast Effects and instead focus purely on the aesthetics of the character.

"Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
This figure uses the Dreamwave design for The Fallen as its foundation. You can see it on the TFWiki. Here are some of the key design elements inspired by the comic book:

  • Head: The head features a helmet with horns sticking out from a central crest, thin eyes and a mouth plate featuring vertical grille lines.
  • Chest: The chest area features several distinct sections including a panel in the middle, panels on either side and "U" shaped pieces under each chest panel. The chest also features vertical grille lines similar to those on his mouth plate.
  • Missile Pod: The left shoulder features a peg on top that you can use to attach the missile pod accessory. This is the same place the comic book version of the character had his missile pod.
  • Hips: The hips have small, rectangular sections that resemble robotic pouches. Each has two circles in front. These are similar to pieces on the comic book drawings but those only have one circle in front of each "pouch". This same area has a distinct armor piece in the front that features two pointed sections with a series of horizontal lines in between.
  • Legs: The legs feature two distinct sections with vertical grille lines near the knees. These appear to be similar to the chambers on The Fallen's legs in the comic books that had flames coming out of them.

With no shade to the artists behind "War Within: The Dark Ages", some of The Fallen's design in that comic book was left rather blank or open to interpretation. The Fallen was sometimes drawn almost like a walking silhouette for dramatic purposes so finer details were hard to see (or just not present). This figure amps things up by adding a ton of additional detailing. Some examples include a lot of line and mechanical details on the arms as well as an extra layer of detailing on the front of the thighs. This sculpt looks wonderfully intimidating and powerful.

Megatronus is made up of black, purple and gunmetal grey plastic. Paint colors include silver, yellow, purple and gunmetal grey. The yellow is largely used for the "flames" that are coming out of his body. The yellow mostly appears behind the "grille" details. I think orange may have been a bit more effective but the yellow still looks good. What I really love are all the gunmetal grey and metallic purple details. Overall the colors on this figure are beautiful and he looks great!

"Robot Mode (Holding Weapons)"

There are a whopping thirty two points of articulation. This includes seven on each arm and leg which is above average for sure. The shoulders alone have three, allowing his shoulders to move back, out and up and down. The hands also open up to allow him to hold his weapons. There are sixteen 5mm ports on the figure. They are all on the upper body between the arms and the torso. The ones on his forearms of course can be used for the Requiem Blaster while the ones on his back are useful for weapons storage. The ones on his shoulders can be used to attach the large flame Blast Effects. I personally prefer using the smaller Blast Effects on the ports located on top of his "back pack". I was surprised the legs did not have ports but you can attach so much to the upper body there's plenty of play value.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the accessories and set them aside for now (you can keep the missile pod attached).
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Swing each fist and the panel it is attached to out. Swing the fist in then swing the panel back in place.
  4. Rotate each arm around at the joint above the elbows so the outer part of the forearms now face the side of the body.
  5. Swing the chest panel and the head up and back.
  6. Swing the section with the arms attached to it down.
  7. Pull the section with the robot head forward and down.
  8. You should now be able to see tread sections where the chest panels were. Swing each of those up.
  9. Rotate the robot head around.
  10. Swing each panel on the chest up, then rotate the chest section around.
  11. Swing the chest section from the last step down against the "arm" that the chest panels and head are connected to.
  12. Swing each half of the back panels out to the sides.
  13. On each half of the back pack, swing out the panels with the spikes on them, rotate them around, them push them forward, then down.
  14. Swing each of these tread sections up and connect them to the chest panels using the tabs on the treads and corresponding slots on the chest section.
  15. Rotate the lower body around.
  16. Swing the hip "pouches" up.
  17. Rotate each lower leg around.
  18. On each lower leg, swing up the panel that was on the outer part of the leg.
  19. Swing the back of each lower leg down.
  20. Point each foot down, then swing the back panel back up.
  21. Swing the thighs up and connect them to the tabs at the end of the front tread sections.
  22. Swing the purple panel between the legs out.
  23. Swing the panels that were on the outside of each lower leg down to connect to the purple panel.
  24. Swing the panel with the arms attached down, connecting it to the panels from the last step.
  25. Take the Requiem Blaster and swing the front half up and forward. Swing the peg on the bottom back and attach the gun barrel to the front.
  26. The pegs on the sides of the Requiem Blaster attach to the shoulders so attach it to one side then swing the arms in to connect it to both.
  27. Swing the missile pod forward.
  28. Swing the "lights" on the other shoulder up and forward.
  29. The weapons can be attached to the sides for storage.

"Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
While the robot mode references the Dreamwave comics model a lot, the tank mode is not quite as faithful to the comic book. You can see a picture of it in this gallery on the TFWiki. I would say the details that most call back to the Dreamwave comics version of the tank are the raised blade-like designs on the front of the tank and the serrated-blade like designs running along the sides. Pretty much everything else looks like a generic Transformers tank.

This mode mostly emphasizes the black plastic with the Requiem Blaster's purple plastic acting as the primary contrast. We don't get to see much of his yellow paint details in this mode, but thanks to where his 5mm ports wind up, you can attach the large flame Blast Effects to the turret to make it look like he has fire coming out of him. You can also attach the smaller ones to other ports. When attached the orange colors really pop in this mode.

The tank treads on this figure are molded details and non-functional. Instead, the tank rolls on four small wheels at the bottom. In this mode six 5mm ports face up on the figure so you can attach additional accessories. The cannon barrel can fit Blast Effects as well. I am also very thankful that the tank turret can turn in a circle and the Requiem Blaster can move up and down.

Final Thoughts:
Megatronus (aka The Fallen) is fantastic. It is not often that a figure nails both aesthetics and play factor but this one does it in spades thanks to his exceptional articulation and accessories. You definitely want this figure in your collection. Highly recommended!

Pros:

  • Excellent sculpt that embraces the original Dreamwave design and adds to it.
  • Amazing articulation.
  • Beautiful colors.
  • Cool accessories.
  • Interesting (but not necessarily intuitive) transformation.

Cons:

  • I would have preferred an orange/yellow paint used for the "fire" coming out from his body. Some more of these details like around his joints would have been cool.
  • The tank mode does not quite match up with the comic book but it is still fun to play with.
