Background:
In the early days of Generation One, fans were introduced to a specialized group of Autobots known as The Wreckers. They were the guys you called upon to do the extra tough missions, sort of like an Autobot version of the teams from "A-Team" or "The Dirty Dozen". In time, the Decepticons would have their own version of that team known as the Mayhem Attack Squad. In 2025 a set of Amazon exclusives was released focusing on "versus sets" with members of these teams fighting one another.

One of the members of the Wreckers was Topspin, one of two "Jumpstarters" from the G1 toy line. Back in 2017 Hasbro released a version of Topspin in Titans Return. This set includes a redeco of this figure using similar Diaclone inspired colors as the Twin Twist figure released in 2022. The Decepticon in this team is a redeco and retool of Siege Spinister adding in redecos of the Targetmasters that were included with Legacy Needlenose. The reviews below will focus on the changes made to these figures for this release.

Packaging:
This set is packaged in a rectangular, cardboard box made of good quality cardboard. The graphics use the new Age of the Primes design with a black background and the Transformers logo set horizontally over the "Age of the Primes" logo. Below that it says "Wreck 'N Doom Collection" with "Spinister versus Topspin" beneath it. Interestingly Spinister uses the Mayhem Attack Squad logo instead of a Decepticon symbol. The box features beautiful artwork of Spinister and Topspin fighting with a rocky area in the background. The new symbols showing the character affiliation and the number of steps in the transformation are on either side (25 for Spinister, 18 for Topspin). The back of the box shows both figures in both modes. Freezeout, Hairsplitter and Singe all get individual callouts as well. The background is the same "space" background used on other Age of the Primes boxes. I have found the Age of the Primes packaging fairly dull compared to previous years, but this design is beautiful thanks in part to the dramatic artwork in front.

Spinister Review

"Hairsplitter and Singe"

Accessories:
Spinister includes the same accessories as the Siege release: two non-transformable blasters based on his G1 Targetmaster partners. The weapon that was meant to represent Hairsplitter is now blue instead of purple. The one meant to be Singe is now black instead of a teal color. Both weapons lack paint applications and feature the same 5mm pegs and ports as the previous versions.

Hairsplitter is a redeco of Sunbeam from the Legacy Needlenose set. This figure is now made of purple plastic with silver and teal paint. The face and arms are teal while the lower legs are silver. Singe is a redeco of Zigzag (who was also included with Needlenose). This figure is now made of black plastic featuring light blue and silver paint details. These colors are all based on the G1 versions of the characters. I appreciate the inclusion of Targetmasters but I do wish Hasbro had managed to budget in new sculpts that matched the G1 versions. This is not a deal breaker however.

"Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
Spinister's new deco is based on his G1 Marvel Comics design. That said, Spinister's Marvel Comics colors changed from issue to issue so he did not really have what I would call a "definitive" color scheme. The pink parts on the Siege version are now a brighter pink. The purple parts (such as the arms) are now blue. The teal parts on the legs and the grey parts from the Siege version are now black. Finally, the translucent plastic is now blue. The deco pattern is also slightly different. The Siege version painted the torso and mid-body section as well as bits of the chest area. This version focuses the paint on the middle of the chest and mid-body, leaving the sides of the chest unpainted. Different colors are used as well, with this version introducing a spot of yellow on the mid-body which comes right from the G1 action figure. Dark blue paint is used on the translucent parts on the legs, which looks fantastic. Overall the figure looks bolder in color than the Siege version but I will say that I don't favor either one. They both look great in their own way.

All the joint and connection points on this version of the figure are nice and tight. This base sculpt has only been used a couple of times (for Spinister and Rotorstorm) so that is no huge surprise. I am also glad that the Targetmasters connect well to both each other and the figure.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. Straighten out the rotor blades on the back.
  4. Lift up the back panel.
  5. Pull the helicopter tail up and out, snapping that section over the robot head.
  6. Connect the black panel to the base of the tail section.
  7. Rotate the waist section around so the right leg (with the landing gear) is towards the front.
  8. Swing the leg with the landing gear up. Swing the panel with the landing gear open.
  9. Rotate the leg so the cockpit cover faces down.
  10. Swing the foot out to the side, then swing it up, connecting the tab on it to the corresponding slot on the ankle joint.
  11. Swing the lower leg over the thigh, then swing the panel with the landing gear back into place.
  12. Rotate the remaining leg so the faux cockpit section points towards the back.
  13. Swing the back panel on the lower leg out.
  14. Swing the foot out to the side, then rotate it around and tab it into the ankle joint.
  15. Swing the lower leg over the thigh, then tuck it in to form the underside of the helicopter.
  16. Swing each forearm up against the shoulders, connecting the tabs on the shoulders into the slots on the forearms.
  17. Connect the sections formed by the arms to the tabs on the feet (now the wings).
  18. Attach the weapons to the wings and to the sides of the vehicle.

"Spinister in Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
The vehicle mode shows off all the same colors as the robot mode but we get to see some more black plastic thanks to the rotor and the feet sticking out to the sides. A bit of black paint is also found on top near the rotors.

Since this version of Spinister comes with four weapons you get to utilize more of his attachment points than the previous version. My preference is to put the Targetmasters under his "wings" on the sides and then attach the original weapons to the ports on the sides.

Topspin Review

"Freezout"

Accessories:
Topspin was originally part of the Titans Return line, meaning he had a small Titan Master figure forming his head. With this release they call him a Headmaster, using the classic G1 designation for a smaller figure forming the robot head. Topspin's Headmaster is Freezeout and it is the same sculpt used for the original release. This time out the figure is made of silver red and blue plastic - all colors based on the Diaclone version of Topspin. In this mode he has silver paint on his head. The robot face uses silver for the face and light blue for the eyes.

This figure also includes two blasters using the same sculpt as the weapons included with the previous release. They are made of dark blue plastic with gunmetal grey paint on them. The two weapons still connect very tightly so you may have to shift them gently to separate them.

"Topspin in Robot Mode"

Robot Mode:
Topspin uses the Diaclone Jumpstarter colors as the foundation for this redeco. The main plastic colors used on this version are red, dark blue and silver. The red is mostly used on the arms and legs while dark blue makes up most of the torso (and the elbows). The silver parts include the thighs and the blades on his back. Paint applications include silver, light blue, yellow and black. The silver and yellow colors in particular offer a nice contrast to the red and dark blue plastic. A beautiful finishing touch is a light blue "Wrecker" Autobot symbol in the middle of his body. I also found it interesting that the designers chose to use silver paint on silver parts, adding on to the "metallic" look of those parts.

All the joints on this figure are nice and tight. All the ports on the figure are solid too. The cockpit cover did pop off when I pushed it a bit too hard during transformation but it snapped right back into place. This figure was never reissued or re-released before so I'm glad to see that the tooling has held up and there are no degradation issues.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the head and transform it into robot mode. Set it aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. On each forearm, flip the bottom panels out, swing the fists in and then swing the panels back in place.
  4. Push the forearms up so they slide over the elbow joints.
  5. Swing the top half of the body down.
  6. Rotate the top half of the body around.
  7. Swing the blades from the robot mode down.
  8. Swing the cockpit cover down.
  9. Swing the arms forward and push them in.
  10. Swing the lower part of the body back up.
  11. Swing the booster panels on the lower legs out.
  12. Rotate the waist area around.
  13. Swing the robot feet up.
  14. Swing the lower legs forward.
  15. Snap the two leg halves together.
  16. Attach the weapons to the sides towards the back.
  17. Freezeout can sit in the cockpit.

"Topspin in Vehicle Mode"

Vehicle Mode:
There have been no tooling changes made to this figure so the vehicle mode (like the robot mode) is the same as the previous release. The colors are of course, dramatically different and the heavy contrast between the red and dark blue really do a great job of calling back to the Diaclone version of the character. The silver paint does a good job of making the blades in front look metallic and in a cool design choice the Autobot symbol used in this mode is the classic version in red. Since I grew up with G1, I am of course partial to the original color scheme for this figure but I'm also a big fan of original Diaclone colors so I really dig this color scheme too.

All the attachment points for the weapons work great in this mode, though I do wish they had made the ones on the legs a bit deeper so the weapons could hold more firmly. The cockpit cover works just fine and Freezeout can still sit inside without an issue.

Final Thoughts:
In my original reviews of Spinister and Topspin I gave both figure high marks. They look great in both modes, they represent their characters well and they're fun to play with. The same applies here. The hardest decision I had to make after opening these was picking which versions of each figure would take up precious space on my display shelf (for the record the original versions still won mostly out of "seniority"). If you're into redecos or want a pair of transforming Targetmasters for Spinister this set is well worth the purchase. Highly recommended!

Pros:

  • Both figures are excellent sculpts that look great in both modes.
  • Excellent choices for both decos.
  • The tooling for both figures is still in great shape, so no loose joints or bad ports.
  • The inclusion of the Targetmasters is a welcome choice.

Cons:

  • I know this is "pie in the sky" but I would have loved a pair of new Targetmaster sculpts.
