Comic Books: IDW Publishing "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe" Licenses to End in 2022

01/22/22

Rumors have been circulating for a while that IDW Publishing would be losing the license to publish Transformers comic books some time in 2022. First speculated by Bleeding Cool, we now have official confirmation of this thanks to The Hollywood Reporter. In a statement provided to THR by IDW, they state “At the end of 2022, IDW will bid a fond farewell to the publication of G.I. Joe and Transformers comic books and graphic novels,”. You read that right. They are also losing the G.I. Joe license.

IDW Publishing has been the steward of the Transformers comic book world for 17 years now. They have also published G.I. Joe comics for 14 years. In the meantime, they will continue to publish the My Little Pony and Dungeons and Dragons comics. According to THR, the plan is to wrap up the regular Transformers series and Beast Wars by mid-2022 with the rest of the year filled in by two mini series events before bowing out at the end of 2022.

Still yet to be announced is who will take over the license. Rumors are that Skybound will get the license next, but that has yet to be officially confirmed. You can read THR's original article here.
